Shocking accounts of antisemitic bullying at two schools in the Australian state of Victoria over the past year have led to calls for more assertive action by educational authorities to protect Jewish studen<\/span>ts.<\/p>\n

The two cases \u2014 one involving a 5-year-old boy at a junior school, the other a 12-year-old boy in high school \u2014 revealed a pattern of dehumanizing language and violent behavior on the part of the bullies, alongside a disturbing indifference from officials at both schools when the abuse was brought to light by the parents of the children<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Melbourne-based\u00a0Age<\/em>\u00a0newspaper on Thursday, the mother of the 5-year-old disclosed that\u00a0her son was repeatedly taunted and laughed at over his circumcised penis \u2014 to the point where he began to wet himself in class rather than go to the toilet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other insults faced by the little boy at Melbourne\u2019s Hawthorne West Primary School included epithets like \u201cyou dirty Jew\u201d and \u201cJewish cockroach.\u201d His parents began investigating whether there was a problem after the child began wetting his bed at home and complained about going to school. One morning, he reportedly told his mother, \u201c\u2018Mummy, you shouldn\u2019t love me. I\u2019m a worthless, Jewish rodent. I\u2019m vermin,\u201d while she was making his breakfast.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI grew up with Holocaust survivors, I used to go to synagogue with my uncle who was a Holocaust survivor and those were the words, literally, he was taunted with when he was five,\u201d his mother told\u00a0The Age<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 12-year-old boy, meanwhile, was subjected to several months of antisemitic abuse that began with an incident in which he was forced to kiss the shoes of a Muslim fellow-student.<\/span><\/p>\n

Interviewed by\u00a0The Australian Jewish News (AJN)<\/em>, the boy\u2019s mother revealed that her son had been lured into a public park by fellow students who invited him to play football.<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as he arrived,\u00a0The AJN<\/em>\u00a0reported,\u00a0he was presented with an ultimatum: Bow down and kiss the feet of a Muslim child, or face the threat of violence by the nine other 12 and 13-year-olds. Vastly outnumbered, the student complied. The incident was photographed, filmed and posted on Instagram.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the ensuing months, the student was also subjected to antisemitic slurs including \u201cJewish ape,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u201cJewish n****r\u201d and \u201cJewish gimp.\u201d He was followed home from school daily, and physically assaulted in the school corridor by an assailant who called him \u201ca cooked up Jewish c__.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe had been punched in the face. The whole left side of his back was bruised. He had a gouge of skin out of his shoulder,\u201d the student\u2019s mother told\u00a0The AJN.\u00a0<\/em>The attack resulted in hospital treatment and the boy \u2014 whose ordeal took place at the prestigious Cheltenham Secondary College, where the\u00a0tuition fees<\/a>\u00a0for foreign students can cost up to $14,000 annually \u2014 continues to suffer from acute anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the cases of both boys, the response of the respective school authorities was woeful, the parents said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cheltenham Secondary College refused to investigate the incident in the park on the basis that it occurred outside school grounds. His mother told\u00a0The Age<\/em>\u00a0that she had been \u201cbitterly disappointed\u201d by the attitude of both the school and the Education Department in Victoria.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI took such offense with the Education Department, because there was nothing they did to protect my son at all, at any point in time \u2014 that\u2019s what\u2019s cut me up,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

But then she sought out the parents of the Muslim boy whose feet her son had been forced to kiss \u2014 and they were horrified by their son\u2019s actions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe sat down, his parents, the two boys and myself, around the table and explained the velocity of [the bullying] and what it meant to us as parents as far as building bridges between Jews and Muslims in society and not creating division like that photo does,\u201d the 12-year-old\u2019s mother said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mother of the 5-year-old boy, who is presently being home-schooled, said that officials at Hawthorne Primary School had pointedly refused to discuss the antisemitism that underlay the abuse.\u00a0The school\u2019s solution was to keep the student from using the regular bathroom, offering the facilities of another bathroom instead, the mother explained.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[The school] refused to accept there was an antisemitic issue. \u2018It\u2019s not antisemitism, it\u2019s just bullying.\u2019 The principal said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to make other students feel uncomfortable,’\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dvir Abramovich \u2014 chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, a leading Australian Jewish advocacy organization \u2014 told\u00a0The Age<\/em>\u00a0newspaper that a \u201cdisturbing trend\u201d was becoming more and more visible.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere is mounting evidence that families are forced to take their children out of public schools and to enrol them in Jewish-day schools due to a growing sense of insecurity and fear that their kids will be harmed simply because of who they are,\u201d Abramovich said.<\/span><\/p>\n
