Photo: Milton Zerman \/ Facebook.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a class=\"profileLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BearsforPalestine\/?fref=mentions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bears For Palestine<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;has put up a shrine in their ASUC-sponsored Eshleman Hall cubicle glorifying the actions of violent Palestinian terrorists who killed innocent Jewish people (in one case two Jewish college students). Tuesday\u2019s New Jersey attack shows us that there is a human toll that comes with failing to hold this kind of incitement accountable.<\/p>\n<p>The parallels between the recent shooting in New Jersey and the attack perpetrated by one of the women they honor in their disp<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">lay, Rasmea Odeh, are astounding. Both attacks were against Jews going about their daily lives. Both took place in grocery stores- one in New Jersey, and one in Jerusalem. Both were cold-blooded, calculated murders meant to instill fear in the Jewish people. Killing a Jew in New Jersey is no different from killing a Jew in their homeland\u2014and if BFP is glorifying the latter then they are complicit in the former.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An anti-Zionist student group at the University of California, Berkeley is facing criticism for displaying photos of Palestinian women who were involved in hijackings and bombing attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a social media post on Friday, Milton Zerman \u2014 a senior at UC Berkeley and senator in its student government, the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) \u2014 said Bears for Palestine \u201cput up a shrine in their ASUC-sponsored Eshleman Hall cubicle glorifying the actions of violent Palestinian terrorists who killed innocent Jewish people (in one case two Jewish college students).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zerman\u2019s post included a photo of the display in question, which featured images of Palestinian women including Fatima Bernawi, Rasmea Odeh and Leila Khaled \u2014 the latter wielding an AK-47 assault rifle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bernawi has been lionized for reportedly being the first Palestinian woman to organize an attack in Israel. She placed a bomb in a Jerusalem cinema in 1967, over objections to the film it was screening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Odeh, in turn, was convicted in a trial overseen by an International Red Cross observer of helping murder university students Leon Kanner and Eddie Joffe in a 1969 supermarket bombing in Jerusalem. She was deported from the US to Jordan in 2017 after lying on her immigration forms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The last of the three, Khaled, gained notoriety after helping hijack two planes in Europe in 1969 and 1970. Both she and Odeh are affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a US-designated terrorist organization. The group was behind multiple suicide bombings during the Second Intifada that claimed more than 100 casualties, children among them, as well as a 2014 massacre of five worshipers and one police officer at a Jerusalem synagogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zerman, along with the UC Berkeley club Tikvah: Students for Israel, condemned Bears for Palestine for including the women\u2019s images in their display. Signs were left on the group\u2019s cubicle, reading, \u201cFrom New Jersey to Jerusalem, we demand justice for our Jewish brothers + sisters.\u201d The message evoked the recent&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2019\/12\/11\/jersey-city-gunmen-targeted-jewish-grocery-for-lethal-attack-mayor-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>antisemitic shooting attack<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;at a kosher supermarket in Jersey City, which killed three civilians and a police officer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYour hero, Rasmea Odeh, bombed a supermarket to kill Jews,\u201d read another sign. \u201cWhat\u2019s the difference??\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zerman has sponsored a resolution calling on ASUC to condemn and disassociate itself from the Bears for Palestine display. \u201c[If] Bears for Palestine refuses to significantly alter or abolish the display, the ASUC shall take further action to ensure Student Union spaces are not being used to glorify terrorism and the murder of innocent civilians,\u201d it reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The resolution will be heard at the next ASUC Senate meeting, the student-run&nbsp;<em>Daily Californian<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailycal.org\/2019\/12\/13\/asuc-senate-to-discuss-student-group-display-in-eshleman-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a statement to the&nbsp;<em>Daily<\/em>, Bears for Palestine accused Zerman\u2019s resolution of violating its freedom of expression, and called it a \u201cdog whistle tactic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBears for Palestine added that the photographs in its cubicle are of Palestinian activists who are fighting or have fought for Palestinian self-determination, which it said is a right protected by the United Nations,\u201d the&nbsp;<em>Daily<\/em>&nbsp;reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis equating of us simply standing up for our right to exist as human beings to be a form of terrorism, or endorsing terrorism, is exceedingly racist and Islamophobic,\u201d Bears for Palestine claimed, according to the&nbsp;<em>Daily<\/em>. \u201cWe have endured years of trauma; we have every right to mourn and honor the lives lost to this ongoing occupation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBeing Palestinian at Berkeley, or anywhere else in the world, means we all live in constant fear,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe have no safe space no matter where we go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Daily<\/em>&nbsp;also quoted Cal Berkeley Democrats President Sarah Abdeshahian calling Zerman\u2019s resolution \u201cabsolutely unfair.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bears for Palestine, which did not respond to&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>\u2018s request for comment by press time, was&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2586888421380654\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>criticized<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;by Tikvah last month for holding a moment of silence to commemorate Palestinians who were recently killed in an escalation between Israel and Islamic Jihad, a Gaza-based terrorist group blacklisted by the US government. Many of those who died were members of Islamic Jihad, according to both the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IDF\/status\/1194940250273013760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Israeli military<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/15\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-civilian-casualties.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Gaza health officials<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A similar memorial was held last month by anti-Zionist students in&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2019\/11\/26\/anti-zionist-students-in-chicago-honor-palestinian-islamic-jihad-members-killed-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Chicago<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, while a display commemorating those killed was erected at&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2019\/11\/24\/oberlin-college-students-erect-memorial-to-palestinian-islamic-jihad-terrorists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Oberlin College<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;in Ohio.
