One of Belgian\u2019s leading newspapers was excoriated by Israel\u2019s ambassador in Brussels this week for publishing an opinion piece that amounted to what he called \u201ccheap, distorted and devious antisemitism and anti-Israel drivel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The offending article \u2014 in the mass-circulation Flemish-language daily de Standaard \u2014 was authored by a Belgian journalist, Johan Depoortere. Titled \u201cHow the Zionists \u2018Discovered\u2019 the Holocaust,\u201d the article\u2019s appearance was timed to coincide with the commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp.<\/span><\/p>\n

Illustrated with a photo of the followers of Neturei Karta \u2014 a miniscule group of ultra-Orthodox Jews who are bitterly opposed to the Zionist movement and shunned by the Jewish mainstream \u2014 Depoortere\u2019s piece began with the observation that the millions of Jews exterminated by the Nazis cannot \u201cprotest if they are used to justify another injustice: a regime [Israel] that has imposed discrimination and apartheid in law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Several of the historical claims made by Depoortere in the article did not stand up under scrutiny. For example, he protested \u201c[T]hat a people [the Palestinians] who did not participate in the massacre of European Jews by the Nazis have to pay the price for that crime or are accused of antisemitism,\u201d with no mention of the alliance forged by the wartime Palestinian Arab leader,\u00a0Hajj Amin al-Husseini<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and the Nazi regime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depoortere also asserted that \u201cthe Holocaust occupies such a central place in the propaganda of the Zionist state,\u201d describing this as a calculated response by the State of Israel to international criticism of its presence in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem following its victory in the 1967 Six-Day War.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom that moment on, the Israeli propaganda and the defenders of Zionism played the Holocaust card uninhibited \u2014 also in our country,\u201d Depoortere claimed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 75-year-old Depoortere spent several years as foreign correspondent for Belgian television, reporting from Lebanon, central America, Russia and Afghanistan among other locations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emmanuel Nahshon \u2014 Israel\u2019s ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg \u2014\u00a0remarked<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on Twitter on Thursday that he had encountered the article while attending the World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShame on you @destandaard!\u201d Nahshon declared.<\/span><\/p>\n

The controversy over Depoortere\u2019s piece comes only a few months after another Flemish newspaper,\u00a0De Morgen<\/em>, published a\u00a0viciously antisemitic<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0article by its columnist Dimitri Verhulst in which he commented that \u201cbeing Jewish is not a religion, no God would give creatures such an ugly nose.\u201d<\/ins><\/ins><\/ins><\/span><\/p>\n

About 35,000 Jews live in Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to an\u00a0ADL study<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0in 2019, antisemitic beliefs are held by 24 percent of the country\u2019s population. The ADL study additionally noted that \u201cin Europe, support for Israel boycotts was found to be highest in Belgium, where 18 percent said they supported BDS [the \u2018boycott, divestment and sanctions\u2019 campaign against Israel.]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
