Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the new normal of lockdowns and quarantines, home exercise videos provide a way to move your body while maintaining social distance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli startup Kemtai is adding an extra dimension of interactivity to a format that\u2019s been a hit since Jane Fonda popularized the home workout in the 1980s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kemtai is more akin to a personal trainer. Using the camera on your computer, Kemtai employs computer vision to scan your body. You can then choose one of the dozens of workout routines on the Kemtai website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As you exercise, Kemtai\u2019s virtual \u201ctrainer\u201d compares what it sees you doing with the exercise routine previously input into the Kemtai system, then nudges you in the right direction. The trainer will give you real-time instructions and feedback, telling you to bend this way or that, squat lower, straighten your back or hold your elbows at more of a 90-degree angle \u2013 all based on what you\u2019re actually doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Kemtai-Image-PR.jpg\" width=\"100%\">T<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>he Kemtai system watches you exercise and gives you feedback to improve your routines. The software doesn\u2019t yet work on iPhones, iPads or smart TVs. (An iPad can\u2019t handle the real-time comparisons, and smart TVs lack a camera.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Kemtai system was officially launched May 19, sooner than originally expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/kemtai-Mike_Telem.jpg\" width=\"40%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Kemtai Chief Business Officer Mike Telem. Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe plan was to do small user testing for a few months,\u201d Mike Telem, Kemtai\u2019s chief business officer, tells ISRAEL21c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cBut when people started getting quarantined, we thought we have something that\u2019s \u2018good enough\u2019 to help people right now. We felt, let\u2019s let people use and enjoy it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During the initial beta period, Kemtai conducted a feedback survey, Telem told ISRAEL21c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOf the random 400 people polled, 82 percent of the respondents said they felt Kemtai\u2019s feedback helped them to improve their home workouts and more than 90% said they would recommend Kemtai to a friend,\u201d reports Telem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The company\u2019s long-term goal is to become a platform for personal trainers to connect with their clients when they can\u2019t be there in person. That will also free trainers post-Covid crisis from the limitation of how many hours they have in a day to work with their clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kemtai has been adding trainers and workouts during its beta period, so that users can choose a style that appeals to them most. The latest trainers hail from Israel, New York and Tokyo. At the time of its official launch, Kemtai already had 10,000 registered users in 20 different countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kemtai software is available on a \u201cfreemium\u201d model \u2014 the basics come at no cost, but you pay for extras such as specific workouts (marked clearly as \u201cpremium.\u201d). A month-to-month subscription costs $20 with a discount for an annual plan. Fees are shared between Kemtai and the participating trainers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.israel21c.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Kemtai_-_choose_exercises.jpg\" width=\"100%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Kemtai\u2019s system guides you through choosing fitness routines. Photo: courtesy<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Telem emphasizes that Kemtai\u2019s interactivity, as well as its scoring functionality \u2013 you get a \u201cgrade\u201d at the end of each session so you can see how well you\u2019re improving session by session \u2013 \u201care essential for having an effective and fun workout.
