{"id":78829,"date":"2020-06-15T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-15T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=78829"},"modified":"2020-06-06T07:44:56","modified_gmt":"2020-06-06T05:44:56","slug":"15-00-49","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reunion68.se\/?p=78829","title":{"rendered":"Black Jewish Rapper Addresses Antisemitism, Racism and Dual Identity in His Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"center alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reunion68.com\/Biuletyn\/img\/algem.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"30%\" \/><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2020\/06\/05\/black-jewish-rapper-addresses-antisemitism-racism-and-dual-identity-in-his-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Black Jewish Rapper Addresses Antisemitism, Racism and Dual Identity in His Music<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Shiryn Ghermezian<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\" \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/49yzp92imhtx8radn224z7y1-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Westside-Gravy.jpg\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Westside Gravy in his music video for \u2018Diaspora.\u2019 Photo: Screenshot.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Black Jewish rapper Noah Shufuntinsky, also known as Westside Gravy, talked in a recent interview about writing and producing music that confronts Jewish stereotypes and antisemitism, among other issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Israel supporter, whose parents are both Jewish, is most popularly known for his 2019 song \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qy1PSKX5RE8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Diaspora<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d which includes the lyrics, \u201cI\u2019m a proud part of the diaspora in my heart I hold Jerusalem and Africa.\u201d He performed the track, in which he raps in Hebrew, at the 2020 AIPAC Policy Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The George Washington University student, who was raised Jewish,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heyalma.com\/black-jewish-rapper-westside-gravy-is-calling-out-racism-and-anti-semitism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>told the website\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hey Alma<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0that his dual black and Jewish identity had resulted in him having to deal with \u201cdouble the racism,\u201d but he said he was grateful to his family for preparing him \u201cto deal with it from a very young age\u201d and \u201cfeel empowered to use my music to deal with it in a productive way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAll the cultural history gives me inspiration, and stories of my ancestors remind me of all I have to appreciate and my responsibility to keep moving forward,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In his song\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bhGbe3S-JRA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u201cStereotypes,\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0he talks about the stigmas he faces as a black Jewish person. He raps, \u201cCrack rock dealer\/I\u2019m a baby killer\/Baby mama drama\/Droppin\u2019 bombs in Gaza\/I\u2019m up in the kitchen whipping up a brick\/Disrespecting women\/Sipping on a fifth\/Then I think to myself \u2014 should I spend it all on gold chains, or keep all the wealth?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Similarly in the politically-charged track \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yvNEVFasMN4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Benjamins Baby,\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0released in February, he addresses Jewish stereotypes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The rapper told\u00a0<em>Hey Alma<\/em>, \u201cAlmost every other Jewish person I\u2019ve met has had antisemitic experiences. I wanted to get the irony across [about] all these crazy, ridiculous ideas, stereotypes and antisemitic tropes [that] are present all over the media. This song comes from my own personal experience with antisemitism. In the video, I use all sorts of examples, historical and modern, to show the history of antisemitism. I wanted to take this serious topic and portray it in a creative way that makes people think about the impact of antisemitism and their actions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Shufuntinsky said he hoped his music could be used to help educate young people about racism and Jewish identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI think there\u2019s a space where education and music can overlap,\u201d he said. \u201cThrough the performances I\u2019ve done with BBYO and other youth groups, I\u2019ve used music as an educational tool \u2014 I\u2019m able to talk to high school students about antisemitism and Jewish identity.
