AMSTERDAM \u2014 Following internal debate, a large Dutch church group retracted and apologized for its call for\u00a0EU sanctions<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0against Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Council of Churches, an umbrella of 18 churches and denominations, issued its unusual apology in a\u00a0statement<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Thursday. The group took back its\u00a0letter<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0from last month to Foreign Minister Stef Blok urging him to scrap trade deals between the European Union and Israel if Israel applies its civilian laws in West Bank lands, a move some call annexation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re sorry that the letter brought to the minister\u2019s attention has led to concern and confusion,\u201d the council wrote in the statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

The letter to Blok was a copy of an open letter published by the Geneva-based World Council of Churches, of which the Dutch council is a member.<\/span>
\nHad the Dutch Council written its own letter, the retraction read, \u201cit would have conveyed more carefully the ideas we wanted to express. \u201d<\/span>
\n\u201cWe don\u2019t wish to speak over specific sanctions or penal action, this is the responsibility of the political domain,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three churches said that Thursday\u2019s statement does not reflect their views. Two had vocally protested the letter to Blok, along with the Christians for Israel group.<\/span><\/p>\n

The kingdom\u2019s main interfaith organ, the Council of Jews, Christians and Muslims in the Netherlands, in a statement expressed \u201crelief that [the council] successfully found its way back to the middle ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The council\u2019s statement reiterated its concern about what it called Israel\u2019s annexation plans.<\/span><\/p>\n
