Jewish actress Winona Ryder revealed in an interview on Sunday that she was once overlooked for a movie role because she looked \u201ctoo Jewish\u201d for the part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryder, 48, speaking to  The Sunday Times<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span> newspaper, said, \u201cThere are times when people have said, \u2018Wait, you\u2019re Jewish? But you\u2019re so pretty!\u2019 There was a movie that I was up for a long time ago, it was a period piece, and the studio head, who was Jewish, said I looked \u2018too Jewish\u2019 to be in a blue-blooded family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking further about her Jewish background, the \u201cStranger Things\u201d actress explained that she is \u201cnot religious, but I do identify.\u201d She added, \u201cIt\u2019s a hard thing for me to talk about because I had family who died in the camps, so I\u2019ve always been fascinated with that time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She also talked about encountering antisemites in the film industry and retold one incident involving actor Mel Gibson, who is known for past antisemitic behavior. Ryder said the 64-year-old \u201cBraveheart\u201d star called her an \u201coven dodger,\u201d a clear reference to the crematoria at Nazi concentration camps during World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ryder recalled: \u201cWe were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we\u2019re all talking and he said to my friend, who\u2019s gay, \u2018Oh wait, am I gonna get AIDS?\u2019 And then something came up about Jews, and he said, \u2018You\u2019re not an oven dodger, are you?’\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The actress added that Gibson later tried to apologize to her.<\/span><\/p>\n
