Jewish actress and \u201cShameless\u201d star Emmy Rossum posted a Twitter thread earlier this week about antisemitism in the film industry, prompted by the latest controversy involving Mel Gibson.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Golden Globe nominee, 33, shared an article about Jewish actress Winona Ryder\u2019s claim in a recent interview that at a party in the 1990s Gibson called her an \u201coven dodger,\u201d a clear reference to the crematoria at Nazi concentration camps during World War II, and told her friend who was gay, \u201cOh wait, am I gonna get AIDS?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gibson\u00a0denied<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>the allegations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rossum \u2014 whose mother is of Russian-Jewish descent \u2014\u00a0commented<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, \u201cThis stirred up a lot for me in a time when I\u2019m already pretty stirred. It\u2019s disgusting. It\u2019s sad. And yet not a surprising or unique experiece [sic] of the white supremacy and bigotry that pervades our country and industry at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d star then shared her own experiences with antisemitism in Hollywood.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOn multiple occasions I\u2019ve had people \u2014 both in the industry and not \u2014 be surprised to learn that I\u2019m Jewish. They usually react with \u201cOh! Wow. You don\u2019t really LOOK Jewish,’\u201d she wrote. \u201cAnd when I offer no response and let the statement linger they continue with some kind of defensive qualifier like \u2018I mean that in a GOOD way! As if \u2018looking Jewish\u2019 \u2014 whatever that means to them \u2014 is something I should want to avoid. This makes me sick.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI can\u2019t even tell you the amount of times I received audition feedback solely based on my appearance: \u2018too ethnic\u2019 \u2018just want someone more \u2018American\u2019 looking\u2019 \u2018we ideally want a blonde with blue eyes, someone that just looks nicer\u2019\u2026.. etc. And this is my experience as a WHITE woman. I can only imagine the impossible hurdles of getting a job as a person of color in this industry. Have I even felt 1\/1000th of the intolerance, bigotry and pain that POC are routinely subjected to? I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rossum concluded by saying she acknowledged it might not be \u201chelpful to compare,\u201d but \u201cit\u2019s only helpful to find deep deep empathy and love and call out intolerance where we see it \u2014 both in ourselves, others, systems, the world. It\u2019s painful and scary. It\u2019s a lifelong commitment and journey. I am and will continue to be an ally.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jewish comedic actor Seth Rogen referred to Ryder\u2019s allegations against Gibson, tweeting, \u201cI\u2019m only surprised by Mel Gibson\u2019s \u2018oven dodger\u2019 comment because it acknowledges the Holocaust actually happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, Rogen called Gibson a \u201cHo-ho-holocaust denier\u201d when it was rumored that Gibson would play Santa Claus in a movie.<\/span><\/p>\n
