US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Wednesday that US and \u201cpartner\u201d forces seized a boat in June carrying\u00a0Iran<\/span>ian weapons to Houthi rebels in Yemen as he renewed his call for the UN Security Council to extend an arms embargo on\u00a0Iran<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Security Council must extend the arms embargo on\u00a0Iran\u00a0<\/span>to prevent further conflict in the region,\u201d Pompeo told a State Department news conference. \u201cNo serious person can possibly believe\u00a0Iran\u00a0<\/span>will use any weapon it receives for peaceful ends.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pompeo is leading an American drive to persuade the Security Council to extend the embargo due to expire in mid-October under the terms of the 2015\u00a0Iran\u00a0<\/span>nuclear deal from which the US withdrew in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

He took his appeal directly to the council last week, with an address to its 15 members. But veto-wielding Russia and China signaled their opposition to an extension.<\/span><\/p>\n

At his news conference, Pompeo said that US and unidentified \u201cpartner\u201d forces interdicted a vessel off Yemen\u2019s coast on June 28 that was carrying\u00a0Iran<\/span>ian arms to Houthi rebels.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIran\u00a0<\/span>is not abiding by the U.N. arms embargo that is due to expire in less than four months now,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The weapons, he said, included 200 rocket-propelled grenades, more than 1,700 assault rifles, 21 surface-to-air and land-attack missiles, several anti-tank missiles \u201cand other advanced weapons and missiles.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran<\/span>-aligned Houthi rebels have been fighting the Yemeni government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, since 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pompeo noted that a report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last week confirmed US charges that weapons seized by American forces in November 2019 and February 2020 were \u201cof\u00a0Iran<\/span>ian origin.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran<\/span>\u2019s United Nations Mission said there were \u201cserious flaws, inaccuracies and discrepancies\u201d in Guterres\u2019s report.<\/span><\/p>\n
