(Photo by STR\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The U.S. faces the prospect of a serious escalation in tensions with Iran after Tehran&#8217;s\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-06-22\/iran-s-navy-seeks-new-base-for-waters-leading-to-indian-ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>that it intends to build a new military base in the Indian Ocean by the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Iranian announcement, moreover, comes at a time when Tehran is on the point of signing a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/china-strategic-accord-could-give-iran-400-billion-boost-up-military-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>$400 billion trade deal<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0with China, which will include closer military cooperation between the two countries in the region in an attempt to counter Washington&#8217;s traditional dominance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under the terms of the deal, details of which have been published in the\u00a0<i>New York Times<\/i>, Iran could receive as much as $400 billion in Chinese investment over the next quarter of a century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The agreement, which a senior aide to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/11\/world\/asia\/china-iran-trade-military-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>should be signed by March next year, also encompasses closer military cooperation between the two countries, including weapons development, combined training and intelligence sharing in order to combat &#8220;the lopsided battle with terrorism, drug and human trafficking and cross-border crimes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As part of the new era of cooperation between Tehran and Beijing, concerns have been raised by Western security officials that this could lead to the two countries forming an alliance to bolster their presence in the Indian Ocean, thereby challenging America&#8217;s long-standing dominance in the nearby Gulf region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.com\/Detail\/2020\/06\/22\/627998\/Iran-IRGC-Navy-permanent-base-Indian-Ocean-Ayatollah-Khamenei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Announcing<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0Iran&#8217;s intention to build a new military base in the Indian Ocean, Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the naval attachment of Iran&#8217;s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said that the base would be used to protect fishing and commercial vessels from piracy and &#8220;foreign ships&#8221;, a reference to the US-led multinational naval task force that is currently protecting Gulf shipping from Iranian interference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Iran has so far given no indication as to where it intends to build its new base. text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Explore\/News\/Article\/Article\/2215452\/iran-poses-greatest-threat-to-region-centcom-commander-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned in a recent interview<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0that Iran posed the greatest threat to regional security and stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;Iran actively stokes instability and is intent on degrading security all over the region,&#8221;
