(AP Photo\/Eduardo Munoz Alvarez)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Barack Obama\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/03\/politics\/barack-obama-first-2020-endorsements\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unveiled<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0his first wave of down-ballot endorsements for the 2020 elections Monday, which included the Bronx Middle School principal Jamaal Bowman<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After receiving the former president\u2019s backing, Bowman explained the backstory behind the announcement: Obama had reached out to him after reading his response to a local rabbi who questioned the candidate\u2019s positions on Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHe read our response to Rabbi [Avi] Weiss\u2019s letter,\u201d Bowman said on a short video\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JamaalBowmanNY\/status\/1290382609487400966?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1290382609487400966%7Ctwgr%5E&amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fjewishinsider.com%2F2020%2F08%2Fobama-endorsed-this-candidate-after-reading-his-response-to-a-rabbi%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on Twitter. \u201cHe read that response. He loved it. He wanted to meet me. He called me, we talked, we got the endorsement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Less than a week before the election, Weiss wrote an\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/riverdalepress.com\/stories\/an-open-letter-to-jamaal-bowman,72044?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to Bowman in The Riverdale Press asking him to clarify his position on whether the US should condition aid to Israel based on its human rights record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Weiss, the founding rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale, also faulted Bowman for criticizing Israel but not Palestinian violence, citing a Riverdale native, Ari Fuld, who was knifed to death in the West Bank by a Palestinian terrorist.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" style=\"visibility: visible; width: 710px; height: 725px; display: block; flex-grow: 1;\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=true&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1290382609487400966&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.timesofisrael.com%2Fobama-gave-a-house-candidate-his-blessing-after-reading-his-letter-to-a-rabbi%2F&amp;siteScreenName=timesofisrael&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1290382609487400966\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bowman responded by\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/riverdalepress.com\/stories\/bowman-to-weiss-we-have-so-much-to-learn-from-each-other,72045?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">penning<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0an open letter back to Weiss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI believe firmly in the right of Israelis to live in safety and peace, free from the fear of violence and terrorism from Hamas and other extremists, and support continued U.S. aid to help Israel confront these security challenges,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI also believe that Palestinians are entitled to the same human rights, safety from violence and self-determination in a state of their own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The candidate added that he opposed the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign against Israel, but would support Americans\u2019 First Amendment right to support it. He also said he was against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s plan to annex parts of the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI can\u2019t promise that we\u2019ll always agree, but I can promise that I will always listen to your concerns and act on them in accordance with my deepest values,\u201d Bowman wrote. \u201cI know that we both have much to learn from each other\u2019s experiences, and I hope that you may give me the chance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Obama\u2019s endorsement of Bowman came\u00a0as he threw his backing behind 118 Democratic candidates running for office in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOur country\u2019s future hangs on this election, and it won\u2019t be easy. But pandemics have a way of cutting through a lot of noise and spin to remind us of what is real, and what is important,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cElections matter. And we need Americans of all political stripes to get involved in our politics and our public life like never before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bowman recently defeated the\u00a0veteran Congressman Eliot Engel in a hotly contested June primary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He will now face a fairly uncompetitive general election in New York 16th Congressional District, which includes the northern part of the Bronx and southern part of Westchester County. It leans heavily Democratic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"fi_inContectMark _103949\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Engel, who has\u00a0held his seat for more than 30 years, is the current chair of the House Foreign Relations Committee and is known as one of Capitol Hill\u2019s pro-Israel stalwarts and one of the most hawkish Democrats. He voted against the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and for the George W.
