Photograph: unknown<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The entire board of the UK\u2019s largest Muslim charity is stepping down after it emerged that the man drafted in to replace a trustee who made antisemitic comments online had himself posted offensive comments on Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) said\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.islamic-relief.org\/Islamic+Relief+acts+swiftly+and+creates+new+board\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>in a statement<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0that posts made by Almoutaz Tayara were \u201coffensive and unacceptable, and in no way reflect the views and core values of the organisation\u201d. Tayara was quoted as saying he was \u201cdeeply ashamed\u201d of the comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">They included an antisemitic cartoon and praise for the leaders of the militant Palestinian organisation Hamas,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/entire-board-resigns-at-muslim-charity-tnktpgb2g\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>the Times reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. It was the second time in under a month that Islamic Relief Worldwide has come under scrutiny over comments by senior officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tayara joined the board when trustee\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2020\/jul\/24\/islamic-relief-head-appalled-by-antisemitic-posts-by-board-member\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Heshmat Khalifa stepped down in July,<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0after it was revealed that he had described Egypt\u2019s president,<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/abdel-fatah-al-sisi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Abdel Fat<\/a><a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/abdel-fatah-al-sisi\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">ah al-Sisi<\/a>,<\/strong><\/span> as a \u201cpimp son of the Jews\u201d and labelled Israeli authorities \u201cgrandchildren of monkeys and pigs\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the wake of that scandal, Naser Haghamed, IRW\u2019s chief executive, said he was appalled by the unacceptable posts and promised extra vetting for current and future board members. \u201cWe have to do everything in our capacity to make sure this does not happen again,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tayara was appointed to replace Khalifa, but he too had shared offensive posts on his Facebook account, in his case while working for the independent affiliate Islamic Relief Germany in 2014 and 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The items on his personal Facebook account included a cartoon that showed the former US president Barack Obama wearing clothing with a star of David, with regional Shia leaders shouting \u201cDeath to Israel\u201d and \u201cDeath to America\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tayara also described\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/hamas\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Hamas<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0leaders as \u201cgreat men\u201d who \u201cresponded to the divine and holy call of the Muslim brotherhood\u201d, the Times reported. The UK designated Hamas\u2019s military wing in 2001 a terrorist organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The posts were first uncovered by a researcher and made public in Germany in 2017, when Tayara was the chairman of Islamic Relief Germany. He was allowed to stay in the post after apologising and deleting his Facebook account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tayara told the Times he was not antisemitic. Someone else posted the cartoon and he chose to repost it because it \u201cwas referring to the Iranian, [Shia] involvement in the war in Syria and the region\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">IRW said it had only become aware of the posts this week, but questions are likely to be asked about vetting given that the affiliate knew about them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An entirely new board would be selected on Saturday as part of \u201cfar-reaching governance reforms\u201d, the charity said.
