Speaking at the 70th anniversary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said that anti-Semitism in Germany “never disappeared.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Delivering a keynote address in a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday said that many German\u00a0Jews still do not feel safe and that anti-Semitism in Germany “never disappeared.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Many Jews do not feel safe, do not feel respected in our country. This is one part of today’s reality and it is one that causes me grave concern,” Merkel said at the\u00a0ceremony in Berlin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The chancellor called it a “shame” that racism and anti-Semitism “never disappeared” in Germany, stressing\u00a0that more recently s<\/span>uch worldviews seem to be “more visible and without restriction.”<\/p>\n

Rise in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Merkel cited the increased prevalence of conspiracy theories and hate speech targeting Jewish citizens on social media<\/span><\/p>\n

“That is something we must never accept in silence,” she said to applause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Merkel recalled the deadly\u00a0attack last year on a synagogue in the\u00a0German city of Halle<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0as an example of “how quickly words can become deeds.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Group related hostility against people is something we must fight,” the chancellor said.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

She added\u00a0that the rule of law was an important tool to be used to this end, citing\u00a0measures the German government took\u00a0to fight anti-Semitism over the past year, including the establishment of a new cabinet committee focused on this issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Anti-Semitism is an attack on people, humanity, against being a human being, because its directed against the dignity of individual people,” she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nazi ideas have ‘not disappeared’<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Speaking ahead of Merkel, Council President Josef Schuster\u00a0also denounced the increasing prominence of\u00a0anti-Semitic sentiment<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0including\u00a0an increase in conspiracy theories and crimes targeting Jews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anti-Jewish conspiracy theories, akin to the Middle Ages, have\u00a0resurfaced during the current\u00a0coronavirus\u00a0pandemic<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Schuster said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Nazis’ ideas have still not disappeared,” he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Central Council of Jews in Germany was formed in Frankfurt in 1950, initially to represent Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were considering exile or moving to\u00a0newly-founded\u00a0Israel.\u00a0The council represented some 15,000 Jews located in the post-war American, French, British and Soviet occupation zones as well as exiles contemplating returns to Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some 26,000 Jews lived in\u00a050 communities in then-West Germany and 500 Jews in five communities in the eastern GDR under Soviet rule.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schuster called the council’s founders as “pioneers.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Where did people get the courage and optimism to start all over again?” he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Its\u00a0founders deserved respect for their role\u00a0planting the seed for Jewish life in Germany, Schuster said, saying that they were moved to show\u00a0“great trust” in Germany\u00a0because they felt tied to the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The council now represents Jewish communities across Germany, comprising about 100,000 persons \u2014 religious and secular.<\/span><\/p>\n
