CANNES, France \u2014 Actress Charlotte Gainsbourg is to star in a provocative new comedy that parodies deep-rooted anti-Semitism in France, its director said Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Jews\u201d \u2014 titled \u201cThey are everywhere\u201d in French \u2014 is being shot by Gainsbourg\u2019s partner, the actor and director Yvan Attal, who starred in Steven Spielberg\u2019s film \u201cMunich\u201d about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Olympics in 1972.<\/span><\/p>\n

The satire follows a Jewish man, played by Attal, forced into therapy by growing anti-Jewish feeling around him in France, a spokeswoman for Wild Bunch films told AFP.<\/span><\/p>\n

His time on the couch is cut with tragicomic episodes showing what the producers called \u201canti-Semitic stereotypes\u201d that endure in France.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe film is not about Jews \u2014 it is about anti-Semitism,\u201d said Israeli-born Attal.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said he himself had frequently encountered anti-Semitism in France. \u201cI was called a \u2018dirty Jew\u2019 at school and later I have come up against different kinds of anti-Semitism which marked me out as Jewish,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMost of all it is because of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. People say, \u2018You give us such trouble.\u2019 And I say to them, \u2018Who is the \u2018you\u2019?\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut it is the use of the \u2018we\u2019 that worries me most,\u201d he said, because it sets Jews apart.<\/span><\/p>\n

The film \u2014 which will premiere in the autumn \u2014 also features a roll call of major French stars including Dany Boon, Denis Podalydes and Gilles Lellouche, as well as Belgium\u2019s Benoit Poelvoorde.<\/span><\/p>\n

French Jewish groups and the Israeli government have repeatedly sounded the alarm in recent years about growing anti-Semitism in France, home to Europe\u2019s biggest Jewish community.<\/span>

\nA French-born jihadist who had pledged loyalty to the Islamic State group killed four Jewish hostages during a siege of a kosher supermarket in Paris two days after the Charlie Hebdo attacks in the city last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 850 complaints of attacks of an anti-Semitic nature were logged by French police in 2014, with that number dropping back only slightly to 806 last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently denounced what he called \u201cpoisonous\u201d anti-Israeli propaganda in France and elsewhere in the West, singling out the country again earlier this month for criticism in a speech at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n

France\u2019s Jewish community is estimated at between 500,000 and 600,000 people, one of the largest in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n
