“<\/strong>Jews who refuse to erase what makes us different will increasingly be defined as racists, often with the help of other Jews desperate to be accepted by the cool kids,\u201d Weiss warns.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

American Jewish journalist Barri Weiss warned Thursday in Tablet Magazine that radical new ideologies that are taking over American social behavior threaten not only traditional American liberalism, but also the future of American Jewry.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican liberalism is in danger. A new ideology is rising to replace it\u2014and it has dangerous implications for Jews,\u201d said Weiss in a tweet about her piece.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss writes that the recent decision by Democratic congresswoman\u00a0Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>\u00a0to cancel her participation in a memorial service for Nobel Peace Prize winner Yitzhak Rabin was a warning to America\u2019s Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jews, Weiss says, were confused and shocked that AOC would reject an event aimed at celebrating peace, rather than realizing that the \u201cprogressive superstar\u2026 was sending a clear signal about who belongs in the new progressive coalition and who does not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAmerican Jews \u2026 think that by submitting to ever-changing loyalty tests they can somehow maintain the old [liberal] status quo and their place inside of it,\u201d Weiss wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss should know. In July, she\u00a0felt compelled to leave her job<\/a>\u00a0as an op-ed editor and writer at the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0after she had become \u201cthe subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Times<\/em>, she claimed, was being driven by a \u201cmob\u201d mentality that forced all staff to comply with the new\u00a0cancel-culture ideology<\/a>\u00a0or be harassed and pushed out.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes sense that many smart, well-intentioned [Jewish] people are confused,\u201d Weiss said, because the emerging movement for social change claims to advance the ideals Jewish liberals have always supported \u2013 fairness, justice, righting historical wrongs \u2013 but Jews see the opposite happening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss gave a number of examples of the new ideology at work, including synagogues defaced with \u201cfree Palestine\u201d graffiti, the Biden campaign apologizing to known anti-Semite\u00a0Linda Sarsour<\/a>\u00a0after initially disavowing her, and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio blaming \u201cthe Jewish community\u201d for spreading COVID by ignoring health guidelines, but in July defending Black Lives Matter protests because they represented a \u201chistoric moment of change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss admits that fear of \u201cTrumpism\u201d has deflected attention from the danger of the new radical left, but the danger from the left is far more serious.<\/span><\/p>\n

The greater danger<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u201cUnlike Trump, this one has attained cultural dominance, capturing America\u2019s elites and our most powerful institutions,\u201d Weiss writes, warning that if Biden wins the presidential election the radical movement may not be checked.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am here to ring the alarm. I\u2019m here to say: Do not be shocked anymore. Stop saying, can you believe. It\u2019s time to accept reality, if we want to have any hope of fixing it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss says that in the past liberal America espoused among other things the \u201csacredness of the individual over the group or the tribe\u201d and \u201cthe belief that due process and the presumption of innocence are good and that mob violence is bad.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a world in which Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg could be close friends. Because, as Scalia once said, some things are more important than votes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo longer. American liberalism is under siege. There is a new ideology vying to replace it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Weiss, the new ideology is being promoted by the likes of Ibram X. Kendi of Boston University and his \u201cideological allies\u201d who she says \u201care presenting Americans with a zero-sum choice: conform to their worldview or be indistinguishable from the likes of [white supremacist] Richard Spencer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The movement doesn\u2019t yet have a name, she notes. One has called it \u201ctherapeutic totalitarianism.\u201d Another has suggested \u201cthe successor ideology.\u201d Whatever label it will end up with in the end, it\u2019s an ideology that believes America is in a \u201cwar where the forces of justice and progress are pitted against the forces of backwardness and oppression,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Weiss notes the radicalism behind the ideology says war means \u201cthe normal rules of the game \u2014 due process; political compromise; the presumption of innocence; free speech; even reason itself \u2014 must be suspended.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe beating heart of this new ideology is critical race theory,\u201d Weiss said, explaining that it questions \u201cthe very foundations of the liberal order\u201d including not just equality, but also the neutral principles of constitutional law.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new order divides America into \u201cracists\u201d and \u201canti-racists\u201d and everybody is one or the other without exception.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJews who refuse to erase what makes us different will increasingly be defined as racists, often with the help of other Jews desperate to be accepted by the cool kids,\u201d she warned.<\/span><\/p>\n

That, she says, allows the new radical ideology to demonize those differences \u201cso that they can be erased or destroyed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy simply existing as ourselves, Jews undermine the vision of a world without difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Zionism is refashioned as colonialism; government officials justify the murder of innocent Jews in Jersey City; Jewish businesses can be looted because Jews \u201care the face of capital.\u201d Jews are flattened into \u201cwhite people,\u201d our living history obliterated, so that someone with a straight face can suggest that the Holocaust was merely \u201cwhite on white crime.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Weiss warns that \u201cthis is no longer a fringe view,\u201d pointing out that philosopher Peter Boghossian saw that \u201cthis ideology is the dominant moral orthodoxy in our universities, and has seeped out and spread to every facet of American life \u2014\u00a0 publishing houses, tech, arts, theater, newspapers, media,\u201d and, increasingly, corporations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt does not matter how progressive you are\u2026 to believe in the justness of the existence of the Jewish state \u2014 to believe in Jewish particularism at all \u2014 is to make yourself an enemy of this movement,\u201d Weiss said.<\/span><\/p>\n

She pointed out that anti-Semitic hatred on college campuses has nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. \u201cIt\u2019s because Jews defy anti-racist ideology simply by existing. So it\u2019s not so much that Zionism is racism. It\u2019s that Jewishness is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Even more troubling to Weiss is that Jewish leadership \u201cwith rare exception, will not address the danger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She is most enraged by influential Jews who cozy up to the radical leaders and \u201care willing to close their eyes to what is coming for the rest of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat leaders and philanthropists charged to protect and nurture our [Jewish] community are entertaining, and at times embracing, such nihilistic and anti-American ideas is a scandal,\u201d Weiss said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not by chance that Jews thrived in a world in which liberalism prevailed. The idea that we should judge each person not by their station or their family lineage but by their deeds; that human beings have agency \u2014 these are revolutionary ideas that are, at root, Hebrew ones. We should never be shocked that any ideology that makes war on these true and eternal values will inevitably make war on us,\u201d Weiss concludes.<\/span><\/p>\n
