Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0has included works by two Israeli authors in its 100 Notable Books of 2020 list: Yishai Sarid, the son of the late Meretz lawmaker Yossi Sarid, for his book\u00a0<em>The Memory Monster<\/em>, and A.B. Yehoshua for his book\u00a0<em>The Tunnel<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0hailed\u00a0<em>The Memory Monster<\/em>, which details how one man\u2019s life becomes trapped in the memory of the Holocaust, as \u201ca brilliant short novel that serves as a brave, sharp-toothed brief against letting the past devour the present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The newspaper\u2019s second pick for the list,\u00a0<em>The Tunnel<\/em>, tells the story of a couple, Zvi and Dina, dealing with the onset of the husband\u2019s dementia. In its review, the newspaper lauds the \u201cgreat beauty\u201d found in Zvi\u2019s \u201cessential human decency. Rather than retreat inward and hide, he chooses\u2014yes\u2014to live.\u201d<ins class=\"adsbygoogle JNS_InArticle_1\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8573325940152694\" data-ad-slot=\"JNS\/JNS_InArticle_1\" data-adsbygoogle-status=\"done\"><ins id=\"aswift_2_expand\"><ins id=\"aswift_2_anchor\"><\/ins><\/ins><\/ins><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Asked how he felt about being included in the list, Yehoshua said, \u201cSince the age of 30 I have been saying this, and I will say it when I\u2019m 84. From my standpoint, the most important thing is the reviews in Israel and the reading of my books here. Reviews in reputed newspapers like\u00a0<em>Le Monde<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Guardian\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>\u00a0are less important to me than a review in<em>\u00a0Israel Hayom<\/em>\u00a0and other newspapers in Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yehoshua asserted, \u201cThe author\u2019s importance is in his homeland, and it is here that his remarks and his influence are weighed. Beyond that, I\u2019ve already been on this list, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m not excited. But beyond that, greater and more important names in Hebrew literature have not been included in the list, and they are still considered very important in the context of the State of Israel. I\u2019m referring, of course, to Nathan Alterman, S. Yizhar and others. These are the great authors we\u2019ve had, and yet they never received much recognition overseas. The focus of literature is its country and its home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Sarid said he was surprised to learn that\u00a0<em>The Memory Monster<\/em>\u00a0had been included in the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t know about it until a friend in Israel told me, and then my publisher in the US also sent me an email updating me. Tens of thousands of authors contend for the list each year, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s a really nice achievement for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He said the book\u2019s inclusion was \u201cconfirmation that my books don\u2019t speak only to an Israeli audience but to other audiences around the world. Every author always wants to address new audiences, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s [given me] a sense of satisfaction. Nevertheless, what made me the happiest was being on the same list as A.B. Yehoshua, who is one of the greatest Israeli authors, and whom I admire.
