The southern Austrian city of Graz has unveiled a plan to combat antisemitism in the wake of two alarming incidents targeting Jews last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Aug. 19, the synagogue in Graz was\u00a0daubed<\/a>\u00a0with the slogan \u201cFree Palestine,\u201d following which Jewish community President Elie Rosen warned of a rise in \u201cleft-wing and anti-Israel antisemitism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Two days later, Rosen was himself\u00a0attacked<\/a>\u00a0by an assailant wielding a wooden club. Rosen managed to escape the attacker unhurt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Announcing the \u201cTogether Against Antisemitism\u201d initiative at the Graz synagogue on Friday, Rosen was joined by the Austrian government\u2019s EU minister, Karoline Edtstadler.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two days later, Rosen was himself\u00a0attacked<\/a>\u00a0by an assailant wielding a wooden club. Rosen managed to escape the attacker unhurt.<\/span><\/p>\n

Announcing the \u201cTogether Against Antisemitism\u201d initiative at the Graz synagogue on Friday, Rosen was joined by the Austrian government\u2019s EU minister, Karoline Edtstadler.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edtstadler described the initiative as a \u201cstruggle for society as a whole.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to remain vigilant, sensitize people and carry everyone with us,\u201d she emphasized.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rosen explained that the antisemitism initiative was built on educational efforts to make schoolchildren more aware of the culture and history of Jews in the Styrian region of Austria, at the same time training teachers to counter antisemitism in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the characters younger visitors to the synagogue will meet is the \u201cGrazer Golem,\u201d described as a \u201ccomic-book hero.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the Austrian Council of Ministers passed a \u201cLaw to Safeguard Austrian-Jewish Cultural Heritage,\u201d more than doubling the government\u2019s financial support for the Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n

Austrian broadcaster\u00a0ORF<\/em>\u00a0reported that the Jewish community\u2019s budget would be increased from 1.3 to 4 million euros for \u201cthe protection of Jewish institutions, the promotion of inter-religious dialogue and the preservation of Jewish cultural heritage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
