Photo: Abed Rahim Khatib \/ Flash90<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Blogger Elder of Ziyon posted recently about a webinar held by The Lajee Center, an NGO centered in the Aida UNRWA camp, that featured Health for Palestine Director Dr. Bram Wispelwey arguing that Israel was responsible for high levels of diabetes among Palestinian \u201crefugees.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, of greater concern, is the fact that several months ago, the London Review of Books (LRB) published a blog post by Dr. Wispelwey (\u201cUnderlying Conditions,\u201d April 18) where he made the same accusation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Here are the relevant passages:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">At\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/resources\/anuual_report_2018_final_low-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">nearly 18 per cent<\/a>\u00a0officially, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worlddiabetesfoundation.org\/projects\/west-bank-and-gaza-wdf15-1304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">probably higher<\/a>, the prevalence of diabetes among Palestinian refugees in the West Bank is one of the highest in the world. The official rate in Gaza is 16 per cent. Among adult citizens of Israel, it\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/diabetes\/country-profiles\/isr_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">7.2 per cent<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Decades of living in overcrowded refugee camps and a rapid transition to cheap and readily available high calorie foods, in part a result of the neoliberal economic changes that came with the\u00a0Oslo Accords, have led to an explosive increase in obesity and diabetes among Palestinians<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>As in other parts of the world, the prevalence of the disease is linked to land dispossession, structural violence, colonial domination and oppression<\/strong>. [emphasis added]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">First, Elder put the charge in context by citing\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worlddiabetesfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Middle-east.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">a report\u00a0<\/a>from the World Diabetes Foundation showing that the Palestinian diabetes rate, nearly 18%, is similar to other\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idf.org\/our-network\/regions-members\/middle-east-and-north-africa\/diabetes-in-mena.html#:~:text=55%20million%20adults%20(20%2D79,IDF%20MENA%20Region%20are%20undiagnosed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Middle Eastern countries.<\/a>\u00a0Additionally, this\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/241814\/countries-with-highest-number-of-diabetics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">graph<\/a>\u00a0shows that wealthy oil-producing Gulf countries with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6074349\/#:~:text=Like%20many%20industrialized%20countries%2C%20Saudi,over%2073.6%20billion%20US%20dollars.&amp;text=This%20is%20an%20average%20expenditure,health%20is%204.6%25%20of%20GDP.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">high levels<\/a>\u00a0of expenditures on public health, such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, are among those states with higher levels of diabetes than Palestinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-118112\" src=\"https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 535px) 100vw, 535px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019.png 1000w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-768x571.png 768w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-370x275.png 370w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-570x424.png 570w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-770x572.png 770w, https:\/\/camera-uk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/statistic_id241814_countries-with-the-highest-prevalence-of-diabetes-2019-781x580.png 781w\" alt=\"\" width=\"535\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">If the\u00a0<em>LRB<\/em>\u00a0contributor was to make a serious argument about the cause of high levels of diabetes among Palestinians, he would have at least had to acknowledge that other, far wealthier states in the region similarly have a high prevalence of the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But this would have required real research, and forced him to consider that cultural or sociological factors, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idf.org\/aboutdiabetes\/prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">individual lifestyle choices regarding diet and exercise<\/a>\u00a0within the MENA region may explain such high Palestinian morbidity rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But, as the passages above show, no serious research was conducted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For instance, Wispelwey claims that living in \u201covercrowded refugee camps\u201d and \u201cneoliberal economic changes that came with the Oslo Accords\u201d led to \u201creadily available high calorie foods,\u201d which resulted in increased diabetes rates. Yet, he doesn\u2019t offer any empirical evidence to demonstrate a correlation between these phenomena, nor any data showing lower levels of diabetes\u00a0<em>before<\/em>\u00a0the Oslo Accords.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Even more clumsily, the\u00a0<em>LRB<\/em>\u00a0contributor posits that the prevalence of diabetes is linked to \u201cland dispossession, structural violence, colonial domination and oppression\u201d \u2014 yet he offers no evidence to connect the two.
