Photo: Reuters \/ Amir Cohen.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A February 6th&nbsp;<em>Financial Times<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b7f8dc31-23f6-4dc5-b073-28c030dac046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">article<\/a>&nbsp;by their Jerusalem correspondent&nbsp;<a class=\"n-content-tag--author\" style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/mehul-srivastava\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-trackable=\"author\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Mehul Srivastava<\/a>&nbsp;reported on the recent&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/icc-has-jurisdiction-to-probe-israel-hamas-for-war-crimes-pretrial-judges-rule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">decision<\/a>&nbsp;by the International Criminal Court (ICC), that the Court has jurisdiction to open an investigation into alleged war crimes by Israel and Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While there are quite a few problematic claims in the article (\u201c<span class=\"article-classifier__gap\">International court sets stage for trial over 2014 Gaza war crime claims\u201d), the following background on Hamas stood out as one of the most grossly misleading characterizations of Hamas that we\u2019ve ever come across:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Hamas has controlled the Gaza Strip since a violent coup against the Palestinian Authority in 2006, and Israel and Egypt have since placed the territory under an unrelenting blockade that has destroyed its economy and largely trapped a population of 2m people within a strip of land about 25 miles long.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The militant group, which has widespread support both in Gaza and the West Bank, regularly fires short-range missiles and highly unreliable projectiles into Israel to add pressure in contentious negotiations over how much electricity it shall receive, the distance Gazan fishermen can venture out to sea and other ways to relieve the blockade.&nbsp;[emphasis added]<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Let\u2019s break this down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">First, contrary to the reporter\u2019s claim (which didn\u2019t include a source), Hamas most certainly does not have \u201cwidespread support in both Gaza and the West Bank.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The most recent<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcpsr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Poll%2071%20English%20full%20text%20March%202019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.pcpsr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Poll%252071%2520English%2520full%2520text%2520March%25202019.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613026896143000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGRBBKAKUDMQ9zgcCwOdPlWHAAr-g\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">&nbsp;polling<\/a>&nbsp;(December 2020) in the West Bank and Gaza by the widely-respected Palestinian polling organization \u2018Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research\u2019 revealed that, if presidential and legislative elections were held today,&nbsp;<strong>38% would vote for Fatah, whilst 34% would vote for Hamas<\/strong>. Even in Gaza, only 43% said they would vote for Hamas. In the West Bank, 26% would vote for Hamas. (The rest would vote for other parties.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pollsters noted that these results are similar to polling they\u2019ve conducted over the past six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So, it\u2019s unclear what evidence the<em>&nbsp;FT<\/em>&nbsp;reporter based his assertion on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Further, it would be hard for reporters on the ground (like Srivastava) to assess Hamas\u2019 popularity based on speaking to Gaza residents, because the group\u2019s rule over Gaza is authoritarian, and protests against the regime \u2014 or dissent of any kind \u2014 aren\u2019t tolerated.&nbsp; A rare example of spontaneous uprisings against the Islamist group\u2019s rule occurred in 2019, only to be met with&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/palestinian-self-immolates-on-3rd-day-of-gaza-protests-against-hamas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">a violent Hamas crackdown<\/a>&nbsp;on the hundreds of non-violent protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Hamas \u2018fires short-range missiles and highly unreliable projectiles\u2019<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Despite the article\u2019s claim, the fact is that Hamas, which has&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/palestinian-rocket-and-mortar-attacks-against-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">fired more than<\/a>&nbsp;15,000 rockets and mortars towards Israeli civilian communities since Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, has an increasingly sophisticated arsenal that includes rockets able to reach most of Israel\u2019s major population centers, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The rocket attacks&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynetnews.com\/articles\/0,7340,L-4093281,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">have<\/a>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/southern-israel-residents-increasingly-traumatized-by-gaza-rockets-group-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">terrorized<\/a>&nbsp;Israeli communities along the Gaza envelope,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.israel.org\/MFA\/ForeignPolicy\/Terrorism\/Palestinian\/Pages\/Victims%20of%20Palestinian%20Violence%20and%20Terrorism%20sinc.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">killed<\/a>&nbsp;dozens of civilians, wounded hundreds, and sent millions into bomb shelters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Here\u2019s a partial list of Hamas\u2019&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/.premium-mortars-rockets-and-drones-a-look-at-hamas-arsenal-1.7061438\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">rocket arsenal<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>M-75:&nbsp;A long-range rocket produced by Hamas in Gaza that can reach Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The rocket is based on technology from Iran, and has a maximum range of 70 to 75 kilometers (43 to 47 miles) and carries a 10-kilogram warhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>J-80: A long-range rocket manufactured by Hamas that can reach the Tel Aviv area, the southern Sharon region, and Jerusalem. It has a maximum range of 100 kilometers and a 20-kilogram warhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>WS-1E: An upgraded version of the Grad rocket that is made in China and is capable of reaching Ashdod and Be\u2019er Sheva. Its maximum range is said to be 40 kilometers. Its warhead weighs between 18 and 22 kilograms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Fajr: An Iranian-made rocket that has two models: Fajr 3, with a maximum range of 40 kilometers and a 45-kilogram warhead; and Fajr 5, with a maximum range of 75 kilometers and a 90-kilogram warhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>M-302 (Khaibar) A Syrian-made, Iranian-supplied rocket with several versions \u2014 with a maximum range of 90-200 kilometers and warheads ranging from 125-170 kilograms.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>R-160 A long-range rocket produced by Hamas with a range of 160 kilometers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Sejjil-55 A rocket with a maximum range of 55-kilometers and a 10-kilogram warhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<article class=\"clearfix single-box entry-content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Their inventory of projectiles does include a lot of short-range, inaccurate rockets, but terror groups in Gaza are constantly trying to improve their arsenal to include more of the longer-range, sophisticated rockets mentioned above. Israel\u2019s blockade is, of course, designed to limit the terror group\u2019s acquisition of more accurate and deadly weapons \u2014 which brings us to the next&nbsp;<em>FT<\/em>&nbsp;claim:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamas fires rockets at Israel merely to \u201cadd pressure\u201d to Israel to \u201crelieve the blockade\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This assertion almost reads like a statement by the Hamas ministry of propaganda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Hamas is an internationally recognized terrorist group, which is&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.terrorism-info.org.il\/Data\/pdf\/PDF_06_032_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">committed to Israel\u2019s destruction<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=azEgBsU6Mi8&amp;t=2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">mass murder of Jews<\/a>. Regardless of whatever short-term tactical goals they may also have, they fire rockets at Israel for one primary reason: to kill as many Israelis as possible. The fact that they\u2019re usually not successful certainly isn\u2019t due to a lack of desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The framing by the&nbsp;<em>FT&nbsp;<\/em>turns reality on its head, just as the failure of journalists like Srivastava to impute agency to Palestinians means that these journalists are unable to reach the most intuitive and logical conclusions about cause and effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel\u2019s blockade (which restricts military items and \u2018dual use\u2019 items from entering the Strip) is of course a response to Hamas\u2019 decision to launch rocket attacks at Israeli cities, build attack tunnels, and engage in other methods of terror.
