Famed British actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry addressed the alarming and sad reality of antisemitism against Jews worldwide in a book review that was publicized on social media last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fry wrote that as a Jew, or self-described \u201chalf-Jew,\u201d \u201ca truth that most of us are too ashamed, or embarrassed, or afraid to name\u201d is that \u201cthe world is increasingly full of antisemitic words and actions and \u2014 while much is sly, implicit and perhaps unconscious \u2014 this hurts and frightens us. \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fry wrote the comments in his review of the new book \u201cJews Don\u2019t Count\u201d by comedian and writer David Baddiel. The review was sent to Baddiel\u2019s publishers, HarperCollins, and the author subsequently shared Fry\u2019s review on his Twitter page on Feb. 12. Fry gave permission to use any part of his review as quotes for the book \u201cbut I thought it was too damn well-written to fragment,\u201d said<\/a> Baddiel.<\/span><\/p>\n

In his book, Baddiel uses his \u201cunique combination of close reasoning, polemic, personal experience and jokes\u201d to argue \u201cthat those who think<\/em> of themselves as on the right side of history have often ignored the history of antisemitism,\u201d according to the book\u2019s description on the HarperCollins website. \u201cHe outlines why and how, in a time of intensely heightened awareness of minorities, Jews don\u2019t count as a real minority: and why they should.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Further in his review of the novel, Fry said, \u201cPerhaps too rueful and wise to be called straight hostile polemic, there is as much sorrow here as anger,\u201d and that the \u201cmain conclusion drawn [by the book] \u2014 that anti-Jewish sentiment, language and behavior somehow aren\u2019t in the mainstream considered as much of a scandal, affront or abuse as all other kinds of racism and minority prejudice \u2014 seems to me impossible to refute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, Fry defended<\/a> Rachel Riley, a British television star who has criticized the UK\u2019s Labour party multiple times in the past over claims of antisemitism within the party. He also previously asserted<\/a> that he strongly identifies as being Jewish despite not being religious.<\/span><\/p>\n
