Israel\u2019s security establishment believes Iran will attempt more attacks like Friday\u2019s explosion on an Israeli-owned ship in the Gulf of Oman, and that Israel will have to retaliate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli news site Walla<\/em> reported<\/strong><\/span><\/a> Sunday that security officials have concluded that Friday\u2019s attack was intended as a warning. The attackers \u201cdid not intend to sink\u201d the ship, one said, \u201cbut rather to tell Israel about their future intentions.\u201d Further attacks are expected to be attempted in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.<\/span><\/p>\n

The security establishment now believes that Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)\u2019s naval force attacked the ship in order to avenge the US assassination of the late IRGC head Qassem Soleimani, as well as the killing of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, in what is believed to have been an Israeli operation. The ranks of the IRGC are apparently in a state of ferment due to Soleimani\u2019s assassination.<\/span><\/p>\n

The security establishment is apparently determined to respond if its assessment proves correct.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael cannot be restrained over the incident,\u201d a senior official said. \u201cThis is a very serious operation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Also on Sunday, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi addressed the attack<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, saying it demonstrated the extent of the Iranian threat.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust this past weekend,\u201d he said, \u201cwe received a reminder \u2026 of one of the biggest threats in the region, Iran.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe received a reminder that Iran not only poses a nuclear threat, but spreads terrorism and conducts terrorist attacks against civilian targets,\u201d Kochavi asserted.<\/span><\/p>\n
