Photo: Provided.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One-of-a-kind&nbsp;<em>kippahs<\/em>&nbsp;designed and hand-made locally in Bahrain debuted last month, celebrating the country\u2019s Jewish culture and community amid warming ties with Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The red and white skullcaps showcase the colors of the Bahraini flag and are emblazoned with \u201cHouse of Ten Commandments,\u201d the name of the capital Manama\u2019s synagogue. They also feature a&nbsp;<em>hamsa&nbsp;<\/em>inscribed with a fleur-de-lis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Houda Nonoo, an ambassador-at-large at Bahrain\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hnonoo75\/status\/1366732114557882373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<em>kippahs<\/em>&nbsp;to the public during a virtual Purim celebration in February hosted by the&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Association<\/span>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Gulf<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Jewish<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"il\">Communities (AGJC), the umbrella organization for the Jewish communities of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOver the last few months, we\u2019ve experienced an influx of Jewish tourists who are coming to Bahrain and want to visit our synagogue (the oldest in the Gulf) and Jewish cemetery (the only operational one in the Gulf) and that interest has further increased since the announcement of the Association of Gulf Jewish Communities last month,\u201d Ambassador Nonoo told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner&nbsp;<\/em>on Thursday. \u201cWhen they come visit, they often look for a souvenir to remember their time here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The association\u2019s board consists of members from all six Gulf countries \u2014 Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates \u2014 who have the shared goal of growing Jewish life in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Bahrain-Kippah-300x243.jpg\" width=\"40%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Photo: Provided.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The ambassador\u2019s cousin, Haydee Nonoo, designed the<em>&nbsp;kippahs<\/em>&nbsp;as a tribute to her late mother, Lily Bendahan, \u201cto whom Jewish traditions and values were a significant part of family life, and who loved visiting Bahrain,\u201d Haydee told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span class=\"il\">The AGJC is selling the&nbsp;<em>kippahs<\/em>&nbsp;for $10 (plus shipping), with proceeds<\/span>&nbsp;going to charitable causes in Bendahan\u2019s memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Announced in mid-February, the organization operates under the leadership of Rabbi Dr. Elie Abadie, based in Dubai, and Bahrain-based president Ebrahim Dawood Nonoo.
