The Grammy Awards is facing criticism from Jewish groups for\u00a0listing<\/a>\u00a0Women\u2019s March co-leader Tamika Mallory \u2014 who is also a longtime supporter of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan \u2014 as a \u201cperformer\u201d for the 2021 award show, set to air live Sunday on\u00a0CBS<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mallory has been repeatedly condemned for her anti-Israel remarks, such as\u00a0calling<\/a>\u00a0the establishment of Israel a \u201chuman rights crime\u201d and\u00a0saying<\/a>\u00a0Israel has no right to exist \u201cat the disposal\u201d of the Palestinians. On social media, she has promoted Farrakhan\u2019s annual \u201cSaviour\u2019s Day\u201d events in which he attacks Jews, called him\u00a0\u201cGOAT\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(the \u201cGreatest of All Time\u201d) and praised him for telling the \u201chard truths.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told\u00a0The Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0on Wednesday that Grammy Award producers \u201cmust be aware of [Mallory\u2019s] toxic attitude toward Jewish community and Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor decades, Americans have embraced [Martin Luther King Jr.] and his vision of a future with the color of one\u2019s skin isn\u2019t the decisive factor but the quality of one\u2019s deeds, a message and value that The Grammys have chosen to forsake,\u201d he said. \u201cTo heal, our nation needs a counsel culture not a cancel culture.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Recording Academy, which presents the awards, did not respond to\u00a0The Algemeiner\u2019<\/em>s request for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

StandWithUs echoed Cooper\u2019s sentiments in a statement Wednesday about Mallory\u2019s upcoming appearance. It also took issue with rapper Jay Electronica\u2019s nomination for Best Rap Album, for \u201cA Written Testimony,\u201d which includes recordings of speeches by Farrakhan and antisemitic lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n

StandWithUs CEO Roz Rothstein said t<\/span>he \u201cinsensitivity\u201d of the Academy in featuring both individuals \u201cshows a disturbing tolerance for anti-Jewish racism, a dangerous insensitivity to millions of Jews, including Holocaust survivors who are still alive, and an utter lack of moral judgment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are saddened and concerned that the Academy has shown a tone deafness when it comes to issues of antisemitism,\u201d Rothstein continued. \u201cElevating such irresponsible choices of role models only serves to mainstream acceptance of antisemitism and fuel the hate that has led to an unprecedented number of hate crimes against Jews in the US.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Carly Gammill, director of the StandWithUs Center for Combating Antisemitism, added that the Recording Academy and\u00a0CBS<\/em>\u00a0are \u201cboth failing in their moral duty by instead promoting those who traffic in such bigotry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe GRAMMYs is choosing the wrong role models at a time when there should be more sensitivity against racism directed at black people, Jews and all other victims of hate crimes,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mallory participated in a Recording Academy event on Wednesday, during a\u00a0virtual discussion<\/a>\u00a0about Black music and activism with \u201cAll of Me\u201d singer John Legend as part of Black Music Collective\u2019s Inaugural GRAMMY Week Celebration.<\/span><\/p>\n
