With 87% of the vote counted in Israel\u2019s 2021 elections, the political ground appeared to shift on Wednesday, with Naftali Bennett\u2019s Yamina party falling from the position of kingmaker and the Arab party Ra\u2019am emerging as a possible decisive force.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s\u00a0Channel 12 reported<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that the \u201cpro-Netanyahu\u201d bloc of parties has fallen from 56 seats to 52, while the \u201canti-Netanyahu\u201d bloc \u2014 a diverse group of parties that seek to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu \u2014 dropped slightly to 56 mandates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Netanyahu\u2019s Likud party won 30 seats, Yair Lapid\u2019s opposition Yesh Atid 18, and the religious parties Shas and Yehadut HaTorah 9 and 7, respectively. The results show Benny Gantz\u2019s Blue and White with 8, Labor with 7, and Yisrael Beiteinu, the Joint List, New Hope, and Religious Zionism with 6 apiece, with Meretz winning 5.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crucially, the Yamina party received 7 seats, while Ra\u2019am is now slated to win 5 \u2014 despite appearing to fall below the threshold to enter the Knesset during much of Tuesday night.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initial exit polls Tuesday showed Yamina\u2019s Bennett set to play kingmaker, with his party\u2019s 7 seats able to swing the balance between the pro- and anti-Netanyahu blocs. Now, however, those seats would not be enough to give Netanyahu a majority to form a government.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, if both Ra\u2019am and Yamina join with Netanyahu, he would have such a majority. By the same token, if either or both of them joined the anti-Netanyahu bloc, it would theoretically be able to form a government, although such a coalition forming is unlikely.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even with most results in, they appear close enough that it remains possible the map will continue to change as the final ballots are counted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both blocs have to some extent declared victory, with Netanyahu pledging to form a right-wing government but leaving his options open.<\/span><\/p>\n

He said, \u201cwe must not in any way drag Israel into a fifth election,\u201d and that he would reach out \u201cto all members of Knesset who believe in these principles. I do not rule anyone out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lapid has also said he will seek to form a government via his \u201cchange bloc.\u201d Lapid\u2019s potential partner, New Hope leader Gideon Sa\u2019ar, said, \u201cWe will do everything to establish a sane government in the State of Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
