RIO DE JANEIRO \u2014 A senior aide to Brazil\u2019s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of making a white supremacist hand symbol during a legislative session.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filipe Martins, Bolsonaro\u2019s special adviser for international affairs, caused an uproar on Wednesday with his polemic \u201cOK\u201d gesture made while sitting behind the Brazilian Senate\u2019s president when he was talking about the country\u2019s COVID-19 vaccination campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among Brazilians, the gesture can mean \u201cf*** you.\u201d But over the past few years, white supremacists have used it to push the idea of \u201cwhite power,\u201d according to the Anti-Defamation League and other watchdogs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Curitiba Holocaust Museum took it to mean the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were astonished. It\u2019s similar to the sign known as \u2018OK,\u2019 but with three straight fingers in the shape of a \u2018W,\u2019 the gesture became a symbol of hatred,\u201d the museum tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martins, 33, claimed that he was fixing his lapel. He also said he has Jewish heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA warning to clowns who wish to support the thesis that I, a Jew, am sympathetic to \u2018white supremacism\u2019 because in their sick minds they saw an authoritarian gesture in an image that shows me adjusting the lapel of my suit,\u201d Martin tweeted after images and video quickly spread on Brazilian social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martins, the son of non-Jewish parents, is a former atheist who became a Pentecostal Christian, Veja magazine reported in 2019. On social media, he once called himself \u201cJewish but Christian.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite having little foreign policy experience, Martins has used his close ties to Bolsonaro\u2019s sons to become one of his most trusted advisers.<\/span><\/p>\n
