In a new literary questionnaire published by Elle<\/em> magazine on Tuesday, Jewish actress Natalie Portman named a number of books by Israeli and Jewish authors that have left a lasting impression on her.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jerusalem-born Oscar winner, 39, who became a New York Times<\/em>-bestselling author with the fall publication of \u201cNatalie Portman\u2019s Fables,\u201d <\/em>said<\/a> the book that helped shape her worldview is \u201cSapiens: A Brief History of Humankind,\u201d the Israeli author Yuval Noah Harari\u2019s bestseller about humanity\u2019s creation and evolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked which text she has \u201cre-read the most,\u201d Portman answered \u201cPoems of Jerusalem,\u201c<\/em> by Yehuda Amichai. She also said the book with the recipe to her favorite dish of falafel is \u201cIsraeli Soul\u201d by Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d star shared that the book currently sitting on her nightstand is \u201cThe Cost of Living: A Working Autobiography\u201d by Deborah Levy, and that Nora Ephron\u2019s novel \u201cI Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman\u201d made her roar with laughter. When asked what she would gift a new graduate, the mother-of-two said \u201cMen Explain Things to Me\u201d by Rebecca Solnit, a collection of seven essays that discuss gender, feminism and power. She added that Solnit\u2019s \u201cHope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities\u201d fills her with optimism about the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Portman also revealed that as a child, she once asked for a Hanukkah gift of \u201cThe Baby-sitter\u2019s Club Super Special 1: Baby-sitters on Board!\u201d by Ann M. Martin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Portman will be the honorary chair of National Library Week 2021 from April 4\u201310 with the theme of \u201cWelcome to Your Library.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
