(AP Photo\/Craig Ruttle, File)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Former US secretary of state John Kerry on Monday denied Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif\u2019s claim that the top US diplomat told him Israel had carried out 200 strikes on Iranian targets in Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI can tell you that this story and these allegations are unequivocally false. This never happened \u2014 either when I was Secretary of State or since,\u201d Kerry tweeted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The tweet cited a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-mideast-crisis-israel-syria-iran-idUSKCN1LK2D7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2018 article<\/a>&nbsp;by the Reuters news agency in which then-intelligence minister Israel Katz said that Israel had carried out over 200 airstrikes against Iranian targets in Syria over the previous two years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Kerry\u2019s denial came amid pressure from some parts of the Republican party after The New York Times published a report on a leaked interview Zarif gave last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2488278 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesofisrael.com\/www\/uploads\/2021\/02\/F201220MA03-400x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"40%\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Finance Minister Israel Katz at Tel Aviv\u2019s Ichilov Medical Center on December 20, 2020 (Miriam Alster\/Flash90)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zarif said that he was often kept in the dark about security matters, and that \u201cto his astonishment,\u201d Kerry told him that Israel had attacked Iranian interests in Syria at least 200 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the recording, Zarif told the interviewer that he hadn\u2019t been told about key issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cKerry has to tell me that Israel has attacked you 200 times in Syria?\u201d said Zarif.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cYou did not know?\u201d the interviewer asked twice, according to direct quotes published by the Times for the first time on Monday evening, to which Zarif responded \u201cno, no\u201d on both occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zarif did not clarify when the purported conversation with Kerry took place. Kerry served as a chief negotiator for the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and dealt closely with Zarif over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel acknowledges having launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war there in 2011, aimer to counter Iranian moves to establish a permanent military presence in the country and to transport advanced, game-changing weapons to terrorist groups in the region, principally Hezbollah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Still, Israel\u2019s official policy is to neither officially confirm nor deny specific operations in Syria, save for those in retaliation for an attack from the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>US State Department spokesman Ned Price speaks at the State Department in Washington, March 31, 2021. (AP Photo\/Carolyn Kaster, Pool)<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2517297 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesofisrael.com\/www\/uploads\/2021\/04\/AP21090694875261-e1617320880967-400x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"40%\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption-text\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">State Department spokesman Ned Price on Monday noted the widespread reporting on Israel\u2019s strikes and implied that even if Kerry had made the comments, the existence of the strikes was public knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI would just make the broad point that if you go back and look at press reporting from the time, this certainly was not secret,\u201d Price said. \u201cAnd governments that were involved were speaking to this publicly, on the record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Some Republican officials attacked Kerry in the wake of the Times report, accusing him of leaking Israeli military secrets. Kerry, who now serves as US President Joe Biden\u2019s special envoy on the climate crisis, was already under fire from the GOP over those policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPeople are talking about treason \u2014 and I don\u2019t throw that word around a lot,\u201d said Alaska\u2019s Sen. Dan Sullivan. \u201cJohn Kerry does all kinds of things that I can\u2019t stand. But this is the one that broke the camel\u2019s back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Nikki Haley, who served as US ambassador to the UN under the Trump administration and is widely thought to be considering a 2024 presidential run, called the reported conversation between Kerry and Zarif \u201cdisgusting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, others in the party urged a more cautious approach to Zarif\u2019s comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Sen. If it\u2019s true, it\u2019s very damaging,\u201d said Sen. Lindsey Graham. \u201cI like John Kerry, but that would not be helpful and it would be very problematic if it were true. But let\u2019s wait and see how authentic this is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Ahead of Kerry\u2019s public response , Sen. Mitt Romney also said that the matter should be examined in light of the fact it was based only on the Iranian envoy\u2019s comments, Politico&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/26\/gop-kerry-iran-debacle-484749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very troubling, and there needs to be full transparency to understand exactly what was done, by whom, for what purpose, and an accounting of what occurred,\u201d said Romney, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. \u201cWe have one recording by an Iranian official, but this is something that has to be evaluated and looked into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The most recent time a high-level US official was accused of divulging Israeli military secrets was 2017, when then-president Donald Trump&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/horrified-israeli-intel-officials-were-shouting-at-us-counterparts-over-trump-leak\/\">told Russia of intelligence<\/a>&nbsp;that reportedly came specifically from a spy embedded in the Islamic State terrorist group on behalf of Israel. The spy was also reportedly a major asset in gaining information on the actions of Iran in Syria \u2014 through its Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanese proxy Hezbollah. The leak reportedly placed the person\u2019s life at risk and Israeli intelligence officials were said to have been outraged by Trump\u2019s actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Zarif made the comments about Kerry in an hours-long taped conversation that took place last March as part of an oral history project. A copy was leaked to the UK-based Persian language news channel Iran International, which is viewed as hostile to Iran and is owned by Saudi Arabians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesofisrael.com\/www\/uploads\/2020\/01\/AP_20007325567832-400x250.jpg\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Mourners attend a funeral ceremony for Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and his comrades, who were killed in Iraq in a US drone strike, in the city of Kerman, Iran, January 7, 2020. <\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>(Erfan Kouchari\/Tasnim News Agency via AP)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the interview, Zarif also&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/zarif-criticized-soleimanis-power-said-russia-tried-to-sabotage-iran-nuke-deal\/\">criticized<\/a>&nbsp;the power of Qassem Soleimani, saying the assassinated head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had been setting Tehran\u2019s policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zarif said that Soleimani had worked with Russia to sabotage the nuclear deal and acted in Syria\u2019s long-running war in a way that damaged Tehran\u2019s interests, as well as undermining him on a number of occasions, the Times&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/25\/world\/asia\/iran-suleimani-zarif.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn the Islamic Republic the military field rules,\u201d Zarif said. \u201cI have sacrificed diplomacy for the military field rather than the field servicing diplomacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The extracts also suggested Soleimani refused to listen to a request by Zarif\u2019s Foreign Ministry that Tehran show less overt support for Syrian leader Bashar Assad, including not using state airline Iran Air to transport military equipment and personnel to Syria and not deploying ground forces to the war-torn country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zarif also criticized Soleimani for allowing Russian planes to fly over Iran on their way to bomb Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the Times, Zarif could be heard on a number of occasions in the interview emphasizing that his words were not for publication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zarif also claimed that Soleimani traveled to Moscow to \u201cdemolish our achievement\u201d and try to stop Russia\u2019s support for the nuclear deal struck with world powers.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px;
