Photo: Reuters \/ Carlo Allegri \/ File.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;initially refused to publish an ad from Rabbi Shmuely Boteach\u2019s World Values Network calling out three celebrities for falsely accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing, according to Boteach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;eventually backed down and agreed to print&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/worldvalues.us\/defending-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>the ad<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;in the Saturday, May 22 newspaper, but only after demanding significant changes, Boteach told&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Algemeiner<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt was an epic battle to get it published,\u201d Boteach said in a phone interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CPJKCVRjCnU\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">original version of the ad<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;is viewable on Boteach\u2019s Instagram page. The headline reads, \u201cBella, Gigi and Dua The \u2018It Girls\u2019 of Terror-Splaining.\u201d It features images of Bella and Gigi Hadid and Dua Lipa, accompanied by menacing terrorists brandishing weapons. Beneath that image are the words, \u201cMeet the new Hamas Influencer Brigades.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThey had it for a whole week and they told us mid-week there were issues. They would not be specific. And then, suddenly, on Friday, just as the deadline was arriving, they said, \u2018no, it\u2019s been rejected,\u2019\u201d Boteach said. After being told at 1:54 pm Friday \u201cthe ad is rejected,\u201d Boteach and his team rewrote it and redesigned it into almost a completely new ad. That version was subject to further&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;pushback, until minutes before the Sabbath, he said. \u201cThey haggled with us \u2014 this line, that line. We had to remind them that as the newspaper of record, they ought to believe in the First Amendment and in the right of a nation that experienced a genocide just 75 years ago, to defend itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As it finally appeared in the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>, the headline of the ad says, \u201cBella, Gigi and Dua, Hamas calls for a second Holocaust. Condemn them now.\u201d The menacing terrorists brandishing weapons have been replaced by an image of rockets being fired through a night sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Dua Lipa, a singer with over 66 million Instagram followers, responded to the ad with a&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DUALIPA\/status\/1396224254761488388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;that said in part, \u201cthis is the price you pay for defending Palestinian human rights.\u201d Her comments brought international news attention to the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;ad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Boteach said he was pleased the&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;finally did publish the ad. He said he hadn\u2019t been tracking the three social media influencers until his daughters brought them to his attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The World Values Network has been a frequent&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>&nbsp;advertiser for years.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Ira Stoll was managing editor of&nbsp;The Forward&nbsp;and North American editor of&nbsp;The Jerusalem Post.
