Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa\u2019s documentary film \u201cBabi Yar. Context\u201d has been selected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in July.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 120-minute long film is based entirely on archival footage uncovered by Loznitsa, which depicts the events leading up to and the aftermath of the Babi Yar massacre<\/a><\/strong><\/span> in September 1941. In a period of two days\u2014from Sept. 29-30\u201433,771 Jewish victims were shot to death by the Nazis and left in a ravine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians, Roma, the mentally ill and others were later shot there throughout the Nazi occupation of Kyiv. The estimated number of victims murdered at Babi Yar is around 100,000, making it Europe\u2019s largest mass grave.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBabi Yar. Context\u201d is Loznitsa\u2019s seventh film to be presented in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. It will be screened in the S\u00e9ance Speciale section of this year\u2019s festival<\/span><\/p>\n

The film, which includes previously unseen eyewitness testimony, immerses viewers in the period and reconstructs the context in which Babi Yar unfolded.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust as other Holocaust crimes, the tragedy is almost devoid of authentic visual representation\u2014Nazi authorities banned photo and film cameras from the places of mass executions,\u201d said Loznitsa. \u201cHowever, it is possible to reconstruct its historical context through archive footage, documenting years of German occupation of Ukraine. My aim is to plunge the spectator into the atmosphere of the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The film is produced by Atoms & Void with the support of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Foundation, which is responsible the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC). The center is overseeing the development of a new Babyn Yar memorial complex<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The premiere of \u201cBabi Yar. Context\u201d comes just two months before the 80th anniversary of the massacre.<\/span><\/p>\n
