Acclaimed director and producer Richard Donner died on Monday at the age of 91, according to his wife, producer Lauren Schuler-Donner, and his business manager. The cause of death was not revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jewish filmmaker\u2019s credits include the 1978 classic \u201cSuperman\u201d starring Christopher Reeve, which grossed more than $300 million at the global box office, as well as \u201cThe Goonies\u201d and all four films in the Mel Gibson-Danny Glover cop franchise \u201cLethal Weapon.\u201d The series grossed more than $900 million globally.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donner, who was born in the Bronx,  started his career directing a long list of television shows in the \u201960s, including \u201cRoute 66,\u201d \u201cThe Rifleman,\u201d \u201cThe Twilight Zone,\u201d \u201cThe Man From U.N.C.L.E.,\u201d \u201cGilligan\u2019s Island,\u201d \u201cPerry Mason\u201d and \u201cThe Wild Wild West,\u201d Deadline<\/em> reported. His debut film was \u201cX-15\u2033<\/em> in 1961 with Charles Bronson and Mary Tyler Moore, followed by the 1968 comedy \u201cSalt & Pepper,\u201d starring Sammy Davis Jr. and Peter Lawford, and 1969\u2019s \u201cLola\u201d with Charles Bronson. He turned to directing films full time with \u201cThe Omen\u201d in 1976.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDick had such a powerful command of his movies, and was so gifted across so many genres,\u201d director Steven Spielberg said in a statement following Donner\u2019s death. \u201cBeing in his circle was akin to hanging out with your favorite coach, smartest professor, fiercest motivator, most endearing friend, staunchest ally, and \u2014 of course \u2014 the greatest Goonie of all. He was all kid. All heart. All the time. I can\u2019t believe he\u2019s gone, but his husky, hearty, laugh will stay with me always.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige called<\/a> Donner his mentor and said the late filmmaker made him \u201cbelieve that comic characters could be brought to life on the big screen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI loved Richard Donner as person, and massively admired him as a director,\u201d wrote<\/a> \u201cWonder Woman\u201d director Patty Jenkins on Twitter. \u201cTo think he made \u2018The Omen,\u2019 \u2018Superman,\u2019 \u2018The Goonies\u2019 and \u2018Lethal Weapon\u2019 in just over 10 years time, and many more. Stunning. Truly one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time. He will be sorely missed.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Zack Snyder \u2014 who directed \u201cMan of Steel,\u201d \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,\u201d and \u201cJustice League\u201d \u2014 shared<\/a> on Twitter a poster of the original \u201cSuperman\u201d film and wrote, \u201cThank you, Richard Donner. You made me believe.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cThe Goonies\u201d star Sean Astin also paid tribute to Donner in a tweet, writing<\/a>: \u201cRichard Donner had the biggest, boomiest voice you could imagine. He commanded attention and he laughed like no man has ever laughed before. Dick was so much fun. What I perceived in him, as a 12 year old kid, is that he cared. I love how much he cared.\u201d He also quoted a famous line from the film: \u201cGoonies Never Say Die.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Donner\u2019s other directing credits include 1994\u2019s \u201cMaverick\u201d; 1997\u2019s \u201cConspiracy Theory\u201d ; the 1988 Christmas film \u201cScrooged\u201d with Bill Murray; and 1992\u2019s \u201cRadio Flyer.\u201d His final project as a director was 2006\u2019s action film \u201c16 Blocks\u201d starring Bruce Willis. Donner and his wife produced dozens of films through the The Donners\u2019 Company, including the \u201cX-Men\u201d franchise and 1993\u2019s \u201cFree Willy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
