Photo: Screenshot.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A popular Argentinian television show has come under fire for \u201ctrivializing\u201d the Holocaust by using an image of Holocaust victim and teenage diarist Anne Frank in a recent episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">During a broadcast of the talent competition \u201cShowmatch\u201d that aired on July 24, contestant Sofia Jimenez sang \u201cYo No Soy Esa Mujer\u201d (\u201cI Am Not That Woman\u201d), a song about female empowerment by Spanish singer Paulina Rubio. As she sang the lyrics \u201cI\u2019m not the type of woman who doesn\u2019t leave the house,\u201d an image of Anne Frank appeared on a large on-stage monitor behind her. (@porquetendencia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/porquetendencia\/status\/1418947506042515460?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 24, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"kvgmc6g5 cxmmr5t8 oygrvhab hcukyx3x c1et5uql ii04i59q\">\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The entertainment industry non-profit group Creative Community for Peace said in&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CreativeCommunityForPeace\/posts\/5830835216989025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Facebook statement<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span>on Monday that it \u201ccondemns the use of Anne Frank or any type of Holocaust references as a form of mockery, especially in the entertainment industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe arts are supposed to be a way of teaching the world about our experiences, the Holocaust should never be banalized in this fashion,\u201d it said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a July 24 statement, the Anne Frank Center in Buenos Aires&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centro_anafrank\/status\/1418984831959044105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cto use Anne Frank as the background for a song by a woman who refuses to stay at home is to bring the trivialization of the Holocaust to an extreme expression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt is an act of humiliation to the victims, to the survivors and to those who choose human dignity as a life option,\u201d the group continued. \u201cAnne Frank did not stay at home because she was a submissive woman, but had to hide to escape the persecution of the Nazi machinery \u2026 Those who produced this aberrant spectacle express their absolute inability to defend the dignity of the human, the dignity of women and their disconnection with the victims of any genocide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The organization also invited Showmatch staff to visit its museum, an invitation&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centro_anafrank\/status\/1420079622683770885\/photo\/3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>accepted<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;several days later by Jimenez, show host Marcelo Tinelli, and members of the production team. Photos taken of their visit will be broadcast in a future episode of the show, the Center&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centro_anafrank\/status\/1419079344748650496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Both Tinelli and the show\u2019s producers have apologized for using Anne Frank\u2019s image in last week\u2019s episode, calling it&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centro_anafrank\/status\/1419079338847313920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>unintentional error.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOn behalf of the entire program, I wanted to apologize to those who were offended,\u201d Tinelli said during an episode aired after he visited the Anne Frank House, according to the Argentinian newspaper&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clarin.com\/fama\/marcelo-tinelli-disculpo-foto-ana-frank-mostro-showmatch_0_mCbqh0lw6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Clarin<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t even know that this image would appear,\u201d he said. \u201cBut, of course, we all know the story of Anne Frank and there are many who have been very hurt, especially people who have lost family members in the Holocaust. I personally had the opportunity to visit the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam four times and I know the story \u2026 we apologize enormously.
