Mike Richards \u201cstepped down\u201d as the new host of \u201cJeopardy!\u201d on Friday, one day into filming the game show\u2019s new season and after the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said he should be investigated for making offensive remarks about Jews, women and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 as we look to start a new chapter,\u201d Richards, 46,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a memo Friday morning. \u201cOver the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also wrote that Sony Pictures Entertainment, which produces \u201cJeopardy!\u201d, will continue searching for a permanent host for the long-running syndicated show. He said, \u201cIn the meantime, we will be bringing back guest hosts to continue production for the new season, details of which will be announced next week.\u201d He also told the \u201cJeopardy!\u201d staff, \u201cI want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing. I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Richards, who was announced as the host of \u201cJeopardy!\u201d just last week, will stay on as the show\u2019s executive producer, Sony Pictures Entertainment\u00a0said<\/a>. Filming for the show\u2019s new season was cancelled on Friday and it remains unclear what will happen to footage that Richards filmed on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement came after\u00a0The Ringer<\/em>\u00a0revealed on Wednesday that Richards made a string of\u00a0controversial comments<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0about Jews, women, people with mental disabilities, little people and the poor while hosting the podcast \u201cThe Randumb Show\u201d from 2013 to 2014, during the time he worked at \u201cThe Price is Right.\u201d Richards said this week he was \u201cdeeply sorry\u201d for what he said on the podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Thursday, the Anti-Defamation League called for an investigation into Richards\u2019 past offensive remarks.\u00a0The\u00a0organization\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter: \u201cNew \u2018Jeopardy!\u2019 host Mike Richards\u2019 disparaging remarks about Jews, women & Asians are no laughing matter. Stereotyping is an entry point to hate and his apology lacks acknowledgment of its harm. This reported pattern warrants an investigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Sony Pictures Entertainment\u00a0announced<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0last week that Richards would be the successor to former \u201cJeopardy!\u201d host Alex Trebek, who died last year, and Jewish actress and \u201cBig Bang Theory\u201d\u00a0<\/em>alum Mayim Bialik will host \u201cJeopardy!\u201d primetime and spinoff series.\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0noted that Sony has been criticized for allowing Richards, the show\u2019s executive producer, to help lead the search for a host to replace Trebek, which ended up being himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Richards previously worked on \u00a0\u201cLet\u2019s Make a Deal\u201d and hosted several shows, including \u201cBeauty and the Geek\u201d and \u201cPyramid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
