Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee said Wednesday that he would revise his\u00a0HBO<\/em>\u00a0documentary series about the September 11th terrorist attacks, after being criticized for featuring an antisemitic conspiracy theorist in the project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lee\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>in a statement, \u201cI\u2019m Back In The Editing Room And Looking At The Eighth And Final Chapter Of \u2018NYC EPICENTERS 9\/11\u2794<\/span>2021\u00bd.\u2019 I Respectfully Ask You To Hold Your Judgement Until You See The FINAL CUT.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The four-part docuseries \u201cNYC EPICENTERS 9\/11\u2794<\/span>2021\u00bd\u201d \u2014 produced and directed by Lee \u2014 premiered on Aug. 22, but its final episode will air on the 20th anniversary of the 9\/11 attacks. The docuseries examines the terrorist attacks while also addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement in New York City. It is unclear which parts of the docuseries\u2019 final episode Lee is editing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The New York-based director released the statement after\u00a0Slate<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0viewed a screener for the final episode and revealed that it showcases interviews with members of the conspiracy group Architects and Engineers for 9\/11 Truth and its founder, architect Richard Gage. The group, which Gage founded in 2006, promotes the debunked conspiracy theory that the Twin Towers were destroyed by a controlled demolition as part of an \u201cinside job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At a 2012 event for his film \u201c9\/11: Explosive Evidence\u2014Experts Speak Out: Final Edition,\u201d Gage opened up discussion for participants\u00a0claiming<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u201cthat our government and the Israeli government, the Israeli Mossad, could be responsible for the Twin Towers demolition.\u201d In May 2021, he appeared on the podcast \u201cConspiracy Castle<\/strong><\/span>\u201d<\/a>\u00a0where the host claimed Israel \u201chas the database that collects all of our phone calls\u201d and that Israel \u201cbenefited\u201d from the 9\/11 attacks. The host then said \u201cit\u2019s pretty obvious\u201d who is responsible for the terrorist attacks, and when he asked his guest about Israel\u2019s involvement in 9\/11, Gage replied, \u201cIt\u2019s not too difficult to figure it out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve actually been called antisemitic [but] I don\u2019t know how that fits in,\u201d Gage also said on the podcast. \u201cWe don\u2019t talk about the Jewish people at all. We provide the evidence \u2014 the technical and scientific forensic evidence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In July 2021, Gage appeared on a panel for \u201cAmerican Media Periscope,\u201d during which two panelists discussed Israel and Mossad\u2019s involvement in the 9\/11 attacks, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The ADL also said that in a 2019 podcast appearance, Gage encouraged listeners to read a book by antisemitic conspiracy theorist Christopher Bollynv that claims Israel and Jews are responsible for the 9\/11 attacks, calling it \u201cvalid research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2017, Gage spoke at the Nation of Islam\u2019s Saviours\u2019 Day celebration as part of\u00a0a plenary<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that featured Bollyn and fellow antisemite and 9\/11 conspiracy theorist Kevin Barrett, who both claimed that Jews were behind the 9\/11 attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0The New York Times<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on Monday, Lee defended his decision to include conspiracy theorists in the docuseries. He said, \u201cI mean, I got questions. And I hope that maybe the legacy of this documentary is that Congress holds a hearing, a congressional hearing about 9\/11.\u201d The Brooklyn native added, \u201cMy approach is put the information in the movie and let people decide for themselves. I respect the intelligence of the audience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lee also addressed backlash for his series by referring to criticism he has received for his previous projects. He told the publication, \u201cPeople have called me a racist for \u2018Do the Right Thing.\u2019 People said in \u2018Mo\u2019 Better Blues\u2019 I was antisemitic. \u2018She\u2019s Gotta Have It,\u2019 that was misogynist. People are going to just think what they think. And you know what? I\u2019m still here, going on four decades of filmmaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
