As I previously\u00a0reported<\/a>, graduate student Kylie Broderick is currently teaching \u201cThe Conflict Over Israel\/Palestine\u201d at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) \u2013\u00a0despite<\/a>\u00a0her history of attacking Israel and recently\u00a0promoting<\/a>\u00a0the view that Israel should not exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to her\u00a0syllabus<\/a>, Broderick also\u00a0scheduled<\/a>\u00a0a quiz on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. Shouldn\u2019t the instructor teaching about Israel know better?<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Broderick\u00a0signed<\/a>\u00a0an \u201cOpen Letter and Call to Action\u201d affirming her commitment to\u00a0promote<\/a>\u00a0the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel \u201cin the classroom.\u201d Her\u00a0advisor<\/a>, Cemil Aydin, also\u00a0signed<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0promoted<\/a>\u00a0the letter on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, 27 UNC \u201cscholars\u201d signed the letter, using their UNC credentials from departments of History, Religious Studies, English, Art, Musicology, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ADL explains<\/a>: \u201cMany of the founding goals of the BDS movement, including denying the Jewish people the universal right of self-determination \u2014 along with many of the strategies employed in BDS campaigns, are anti-Semitic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0signatory<\/a>\u00a0to the letter is\u00a0Elyse Crystall<\/a>\u00a0from UNC\u2019s English and Comparative Literature Department. In 2018, Crystall\u00a0shocked<\/a>\u00a0the Jewish community when she wrote an\u00a0antisemitic email<\/a>\u00a0opposing a candidate for city council because the candidate attends a local synagogue.<\/span><\/p>\n

UNC geography professor\u00a0Altha Cravey<\/a>, another signatory, taught\u00a0many courses<\/a>\u00a0at UNC and is still\u00a0listed<\/a>\u00a0as an active\u00a0professor<\/a>, though she recently retired. Cravey\u00a0promoted<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0antisemitic initiative<\/a>\u00a0on social medial asking the public to boycott \u201cJewish Products made in Israel or made outside of Israel that directly or indirectly support Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Imagine the outcry if a UNC professor encouraged boycotting \u201cMuslim Products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Cravey also felt the need to\u00a0tweet<\/a>, \u201cApparently a Jewish person can learn to speak a hateful slur as fluently as others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Prominent UNC faculty members in two of the departments offering Broderick\u2019s course\u00a0signed<\/a>\u00a0a \u201cStatement on Palestine from North Carolina Academics,\u201d stating, \u201cWe acknowledge our complicity in Israel\u2019s oppression of the Palestinians\u2026[and we] reject the prevalent \u2018two-sides\u2019 narrative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A number of the\u00a0signatories<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 either directly or indirectly \u2014 are Broderick\u2019s supervisors or mentors. One is Morgan Pitelka, a member of the History Department, who heads UNC\u2019s Asian and Middle Eastern Studies program. Three department\u00a0officers<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0signed<\/a>: Department Chair Lisa Lindsay; Diversity Liaison\/Director of Equity and Inclusion Miguel La Serna; and Director of Graduate Studies Sarah Shields, who is a\u00a0BDS activist.\u00a0<\/a>She taught the Israel\/Palestine course up until this year, and is now\u00a0supervising<\/a>\u00a0Broderick\u2019s course.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if Kylie Broderick relents on her promise to use her UNC classroom to endorse BDS, her recent public comments \u2014 such as\u00a0tweeting<\/a>\u00a0\u201cZionist dirtbags\u201d and\u00a0demanding<\/a>\u00a0\u201cEveryone at UNC\u2026Boycott Israeli products\u201d \u2014 have already stopped some Jewish students from enrolling in the class and contributed to an anti-Jewish and anti-Israel atmosphere on campus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abigail Adams<\/a>, one such student,\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that dozens of Jewish students are frustrated with the administration. \u201cJewish students would just love to have a seat at the table and to be listened to by the administration.. \u2026 The administration hasn\u2019t listened to us at all.\u201d Adams\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0ABC News<\/i>, \u201cIt\u2019s [not] fair for any student to worry about getting a lower grade because of their opinion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A 2020 UNC graduate told me about enrolling in and attending Shields\u2019 course, \u201cThe Modern Middle East.\u201d The student reported that Shields spent the first 30 minutes of the first class attacking Israel with a photo presentation showing \u201cthe worst pictures she [Shields] could find of Israel.\u201d The student left after those first 30 minutes, never to return.<\/span><\/p>\n

UNC has nurtured and created a hostile academic environment, preventing some Jewish and pro-Israel students from enrolling in courses on Israel and related topics \u2014 and also skewing the perception of Israel in the minds of uniformed and under-informed students. Chancellor\u00a0Kevin M. Guskiewicz<\/a>\u00a0and other senior UNC administrators are to blame.<\/span><\/p>\n
