After Netflix announced that it acquired the entire catalogue of works by the late British children\u2019s author Roald Dahl, the Board of Deputies of British Jews called on the streaming giant to produce a documentary examining the \u201cCharlie and the Chocolate Factory\u201d writer\u2019s antisemitic history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said in a statement<\/a> on Thursday that Dahl\u2019s \u201cvirulent antisemitism\u201d is widely known and had \u201csadly marred the full enjoyment of his works\u201d for many people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not believe that Netflix should be prefacing every film and TV series it adapts from Dahl\u2019s works with disclaimers about his bigotry. However, we fear that, as part of Netflix\u2019s stated plans to create a \u2018unique universe\u2019 around his works, a by-product of that may be to present Dahl \u2014 whether on-screen or off it \u2014 as some sort of paragon of kindness and virtue,\u201d she explained. \u201cTo avoid such an approach, Netflix should produce a documentary fully exploring the antisemitism that so tarnishes Dahl\u2019s legacy. Failure to do so will not go unnoticed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s acquisition<\/a> of the Roald Dahl Story Company (RDSC) gives the streaming platform full rights to all of Dahl\u2019s works, which include \u201cJames and the Giant Peach,\u201d \u201cFantastic Mr. Fox,\u201d \u201cMatilda,\u201d \u201cThe BFG,\u201d \u201cThe Witches\u201d and \u201cThe Twits.\u201d Dahl\u2019s books have been translated into 63 languages and sold more than 300 million copies worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

The author was unapologetic about his antisemitism. Months before he died in 1990, at the age of 74, he told The Independent<\/em> that Jewish publishers \u201ccontrol the media\u201d and said, \u201cI\u2019m certainly anti-Israeli and I\u2019ve become antisemitic in as much as that you get a Jewish person in another country like England strongly supporting Zionism,\u201d The Guardian<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <\/em>reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

He told Britain\u2019s New Statesman<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <\/em>magazine that \u201cthere is a trait in the Jewish character that does provoke animosity, maybe it\u2019s a kind of lack of generosity towards non-Jews \u2026 Even a stinker like Hitler didn\u2019t just pick on them for no reason.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He also made comments about \u201cthose powerful American Jewish bankers\u201d and claimed that the US government was \u201cutterly dominated by the great Jewish financial institutions over there,\u201d The New York Times<\/em><\/a> <\/strong><\/span>has reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a review on a book about the Lebanon War that appeared in the August 1983 edition of the British periodical Literary Review<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span>, Dahl said about Jewish people: \u201cNever before in the history of man has a race of people switched so rapidly from being much-pitied victims to barbarous murderers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Dahl\u2019s family issued an apology for his antisemitism on the author\u2019s official website<\/a> in 2020. At the time, van der Zyl said<\/a>, \u201cThis apology should have happened long ago \u2014 and it is of concern that it has happened so quietly now.\u201d She also said educators should use Dahl\u2019s books \u201cas an opportunity for young people to learn about his intolerant views.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Netflix said<\/a> on Wednesday that its partnership with RDSC began in 2018 with the aim of creating a number of animated television series\u2019 based on Dahl\u2019s books. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi is already working on a series based on \u201cCharlie and the Chocolate Factory,\u201d and Netflix is collaborating with Sony and Working Title on an adaptation of \u201cMatilda The Musical.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A source close to Netflix told The Jewish Chronicle<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span> that the company condemns \u201cantisemitism in all its forms\u201d and is \u201ccommitted to inclusion in our workplace and our storytelling, including in how we tell these stories going forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
