Irecently had to read a book by Sally Rooney in a work capacity, and my goodness that was half an hour of my life I\u2019ll never get back. Come on, how could I be expected to read the whole darn thing when I\u2019d already had the pleasure of Conversations with Friends <\/em>and come to the conclusion that once you\u2019ve read one book about people getting naked and saying stuff about the pointlessness of life, you\u2019ve read them all?<\/span><\/p>\n

Her writing is so blank that in parts it reads like a children\u2019s starter book \u2014 Janet and John Get Naked and Say Stuff about the Pointlessness of Existence<\/em>. Rooney describes herself as a Marxist and she doesn\u2019t use speech marks. Is the concept of \u2018a plot\u2019 itself a bourgeois construct? Reading Rooney, you might think so.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, despite being such a fan of the excellent state of Israel and its gorgeous people, I wasn\u2019t as cross as many of my mates \u2014 Jews and allies alike \u2014 when the Israeli newspaper Haaretz <\/em>reported that Rooney would not allow her latest gem, Beautiful World, Where Are You<\/em>, to be translated into Hebrew.<\/span><\/p>\n
