This weekend, Israel officially designated six different non-governmental organizations as terror groups. The Associated Press<\/em> headline<\/a><\/strong><\/span> reads: \u201cIsrael outlaws Palestinian rights <\/i>groups, alleging <\/i>terrorism.\u201d [Emphasis added.]<\/span><\/p>\n

The AP went on to quote critics who say the move was meant to \u201cmuzzle human rights monitoring,\u201d and to \u201cpunish\u201d critics of Israel. The widely distributed wire service even included a statement by B\u2019Tselem calling the move, \u201can act characteristic of totalitarian regimes, with the clear purpose of shutting down these organizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This framing set the stage for a variety of other groups around the world to make public statements, such as the International Human Rights Clinic at Harvard Law School, which said that it \u201cstands in solidarity with Palestinian civil society and calls on the Israeli government to reverse its decision to criminalize prominent human rights organizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
