The&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/middle-east-israel-terrorism-96464d7d14c3a1a0b5adb75a45aa6a5e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Associated Press<\/em>&nbsp;headline<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;reads: \u201cIsrael outlaws Palestinian&nbsp;<i>rights&nbsp;<\/i>groups,&nbsp;<i>alleging&nbsp;<\/i>terrorism.\u201d [Emphasis added.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The AP went on to quote critics who say the move was meant to \u201cmuzzle human rights monitoring,\u201d and to \u201cpunish\u201d critics of Israel. text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israeli-terror-designation-of-palestinian-ngos-sparks-furious-backlash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed that Israel<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;was trying to \u201cconstrain \u2026 entirely peaceful and legitimate activities\u201d by \u201chumanitarian groups,\u201d and even the US State Department&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/in-rebuke-us-demands-israel-explain-terror-listing-for-palestinian-ngos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">issued a statement<\/a>&nbsp;asking for clarification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To the AP\u2019s credit, its article also quoted the Israeli Defense Ministry, which said that the groups are linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) \u2014 which is designated as a terror organization by most Western governments, including&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mod.gov.il\/Defence-and-Security\/Fighting_terrorism\/Documents\/%d7%a2%d7%95%d7%aa%d7%a7%20%d7%a9%d7%9c%20terror%20-%20%207-7-2015.xls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Israel<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/j\/ct\/rls\/other\/des\/123085.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States<\/a>,<\/strong><\/span> and is responsible for<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.il\/mfa\/foreignpolicy\/terrorism\/palestinian\/pages\/suicide%20and%20other%20bombing%20attacks%20in%20israel%20since.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a litany of horrific terror attacks<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;against civilians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">So the AP achieved a kind of \u201cbalance\u201d by quoting two \u201csides.\u201d But there was one critical aspect that the AP entirely left out of their reporting: the actual truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Does \u201cBalance\u201d Mean Good Journalism?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To answer this question, imagine if the story was not about politics, but rather about who won a recent baseball game: one commentator says it was the Atlanta Braves, another the LA Dodgers. Can you imagine a sports reporter simply quoting \u201cboth sides,\u201d and leaving the audience to wonder which side won?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Of course, the example is absurd \u2014 not because it is wrong to have balance, but because in this case, the journalist has access to something even better: reliable, independent data that anyone can check. So if a journalist had any doubt, he or she could&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/game\/_\/gameId\/401361973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review actual video footage<\/a>&nbsp;of the game and independently confirm that Atlanta won by a score of 4-2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Of course, in some cases, a journalist will not have complete information, and therefore must rely on competing accounts from diverse sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This is not one of those cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>From the Data to the Truth<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel has stated that it was acting on classified information, and declined to give further details, which does not give a journalist much to go on. However, much like checking the winner of a baseball game, it would have taken only a modest amount of research to confirm that the relevant NGOs are indeed closely connected with terrorism, based on publicly available data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">An investigation commissioned&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pdf.usaid.gov\/pdf_docs\/PNABY769.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">by the United States Agency of International Development (USAID)<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span>describes the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ngo-monitor.org\/ngos\/union-of-palestinian-womens-committees-upwc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Union of Palestinian Women\u2019s Committees (UPWC) as&nbsp;<\/a>the \u201cwomen\u2019s organization\u201d&nbsp;of the PFLP.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/pdf.usaid.gov\/pdf_docs\/PNABY769.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">same USAID commissioned investigation<\/a>&nbsp;describes the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) as being the agricultural arm of the PFLP.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On August 23, 2019, two UAWC employees carried out a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/israel-releases-senior-pflp-member-khalida-jarrar-after-2-years-in-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>particularly brutal terror attack<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a>&nbsp;in which they injured Rabbi Eitan Shnerb (46) and his son, Dvir (19), and murdered his daughter, Rina (17). The&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/ejpress.org\/the-dutch-government-halts-funds-to-palestinian-ngo-linked-linked-to-terrorists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UAWC employees were closely linked to the PFLP<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On August 30, 2020, the PFLP&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cidi.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PFLP-statement.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released a statement<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;confirming that former UAWC director Samer Arbid is also a PFLP commander, and was involved in the terror attack that murdered Rina Shnerb.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2020, the government of the Netherlands, one of UAWC\u2019s European sponsors,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/netherlands-admits-to-paying-terrorists-who-killed-17-year-old-israeli-635792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admitted<\/a>&nbsp;that part of a Dutch aid package was used to pay the salaries of two UAWC employees who were charged with murdering Rina Shnerb.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/en\/2012\/ecosoc6493.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The United Nations refused<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;the Addameer rights group\u2019s&nbsp;request for Special Consultative Status due to the group\u2019s relationship to the PFLP.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In May 2018, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uklfi.com\/credit-card-donations-to-terrorist-linked-ngos-terminated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shut down<\/a>&nbsp;online credit card donations to Al-Haq due to the group\u2019s ties to the PFLP. In fact, the group was founded by PFLP members.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In addition to the above, many of the figures in these organizations&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ngo-monitor.org\/reports\/current-and-former-ngo-employees-arrested-as-part-of-pflp-terror-cell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have been arrested<\/a>&nbsp;for acts of terror, in some cases multiple times, and numerous cases&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ngo-monitor.org\/nm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Jabarin-2007-decision-translation_NGO-Monitor-aug2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were ruled upon<\/a>&nbsp;by Israel\u2019s independent judiciary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The PFLP did not deny its affiliations to the various NGOs. To the contrary,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/palestinians-fume-over-labelling-of-ngos-as-terrorist-organizations-682891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a spokesman for the terror group, Kayed al-Ghoul, stated<\/a>&nbsp;that Palestinians are \u201cproud of the affiliation of any of their sons with any national faction that resists the occupation, including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">There are places in the world where dictatorships and tyrants really do use police powers to shut down legitimate human rights organizations. To lump such organizations in with the likes of the PFLP and its affiliates harms the cause of human rights the world over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a world of 24-hour news and rapid deadlines, journalists work under significant time and resource constraints. Yet it took HonestReporting less than two hours to conduct this research, and we completed it well in advance of our own publication deadline.
