You get Ezra Edmond\u2019s debut children\u2019s short film,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"http:\/\/blewishshortfilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Blewish<\/strong><\/span>,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;which is having its world premiere at the&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/facets.org\/cicff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chicago International Children\u2019s Film Festival.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Edmond, who is in his early thirties, is a Los Angeles-born writer, director and producer with a passion for storytelling and insights into complex identities. The dynamics of growing up with an Ashkenazi mother from Los Angeles and a Black father from Alabama fueled his vision for the animated film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAs a child, I felt like I was the only person who was both Black and Jewish. When I was in Jewish spaces, there never seemed to be Black people around. The dynamics of having a Jewish mother from New York City and a Black father from Alabama fueled his vision for his animated film.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cPeople would often ask me where I was from or what my background was. In Hebrew School, some non-Black Jewish kids wondered what I was doing there,\u201d said Edmond, who said he \u201cgrew up conservative\u201d and became a bar mitzvah. \u201cI was trying to figure out myself, where I fit in, feeling comfortable and not highlighting different pieces of my identity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet he did have hints he wasn\u2019t truly alone. People would point out to him that musician Lenny Kravitz was Black and Jewish, and when he was older, he realized many celebrities share that mix, including Rashida Jones, Daveed Diggs, Tracee Ellis Ross, Drake, Maya Rudolph, Rain Pryor, Eric Andre. He has developed stories for web and screen, worked with Disney, Pixar, Lucasfilm and other major entities. It all comes together in \u201cBlewish,\u201d the story of a young Ezra, who, like the young Edmond, is often made to feel out of place because of his Biracial background and appearance. Things look up when he meets two other Blewish children with similar experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI wanted to write something that felt genuine,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to tell a story that will resonate. His credits also include hit television series \u201cKey and Peele,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife\u201d and \u201cOutlander.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI\u2019m happy to be telling this story, and having people say, \u2018I get it,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThe whole point of \u2018Blewish\u2019 is to make space for kids who watch it, along with parents, schoolteachers, and others to hopefully see the world more through the child\u2019s perspective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Next up, Edmond is writing and illustrating a children\u2019s book, \u201cMy Friend LeVar,\u201d inspired by his early love of reading and childhood hero, \u201cReading Rainbow\u201d host LeVar Burton. The book, slated for publication in 2023 by&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.charlesbridge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Charlesbridge Publishing,<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;is about a book-loving boy, his imagined adventures alongside Burton, and what happens when they meet in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While Edmond hadn\u2019t seen himself creating content for children, an exchange on Twitter asking why there weren\u2019t any books about Burton got his attention.
