Jewish comedian Susie Essman, who stars in the\u00a0HBO<\/em>\u00a0series \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm,\u201d spoke in a recent interview about why she thinks many comedians have Eastern European backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the shtetl Jews, from the Pale. The great Borscht Belt comedians \u2014 the Jack Bennys and the George Burnses and later on the Alan Kings \u2014 were all the traditional outsider immigrant[s] looking in,\u201d she told the Substack weekly newsletter\u00a0OLD GOATS<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The New York native added, \u201cAnd also, in Judaism, there\u2019s something about questioning. To be a learned person, you\u2019re studying the Talmud and the Torah. And you\u2019re always questioning it. My husband\u2019s Catholic, where you do what the priests tell you to do. You don\u2019t ask any questions. But in Judaism, you\u2019re supposed to constantly analyze and question. That tremendously lends itself to comedy, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When interviewer Jonathan Alter claimed that \u201cuptight German Jews didn\u2019t really become comedians as much,\u201d the actress agreed, saying that German Jews \u201cwere much more assimilated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Essman \u2014 whose foul-mouthed character on \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm,\u201d Susie Greene, has been called a \u201crage icon\u201d \u2014 also discussed how her parents\u2019 bitter marriage and their constant arguing inspired her on-screen persona.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot of tension growing up and there was a lot of screaming and yelling and fighting and doors slamming,\u201d she said. \u201cI remember every door in our house was off the hinges because my father would punch the doors so he wouldn\u2019t hit any of us, but sometimes he did. He was an angry guy, my father, a Lower East Side tough Jew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Essman said Judaism did not play a large role in her upbringing and that her parents \u201cdidn\u2019t indoctrinate us with religion at all.\u201d In addition, her Jewish grandmother was \u201cdeeply ashamed and embarrassed by her immigrant experience,\u201d the actress explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[My grandmother] grew up on the Lower East Side in brutal poverty \u2014 no indoor plumbing \u2014 and left school in the third grade to go to work in a factory,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I remember asking her questions, and she did not want to talk about it. She used to say to me that she was so ashamed of being an immigrant, of not being an American.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 11th season of \u201cCurb Your Enthusiasm\u201d is now airing Sunday nights on\u00a0HBO<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
