Photo: YouTube screenshot<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Two Holocaust survivors met with a British former cricket player on Thursday to discuss antisemitism, Jewish life and the Holocaust after his past antisemitic comments about Jews were revealed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Auschwitz survivor and TikTok sensation Lily Ebert had a sit-down conversation with former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq, and together, they visited the Kinloss Synagogue in Finchley with her grandson, Dov Forman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rafiq had earlier testified before the British parliament about discrimination he faced while playing for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He has since\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/11\/19\/british-cricket-player-apologizes-for-antisemitic-exchange\/\">apologized<\/a>\u00a0for the antisemitic comments from 2011 that subsequently emerged, saying he had \u201cabsolutely no excuses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Britain\u2019s\u00a0<em>Jewish News\u00a0<\/em>and Forman, who co-wrote Ebert\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/07\/29\/prince-charles-pens-foreword-for-upcoming-memoir-by-holocaust-survivor-tiktok-star\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">memoir<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year, helped organize the meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A tour of the synagogue, where Forman held his bar mitzvah ceremony, was led by Kinloss Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence, who explained various parts of the temple and its many rituals. Rafiq was also shown a Torah scroll, which Forman then read from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ebert, who lives in the UK, started a TikTok account with the help of her grandson to educate people about the Holocaust, and now boasts over 1.5 million followers.\u00a0 She showed Rafiq the numbered tattoo she got at the Auschwitz concentration camp and said, \u201cEverybody who was there got a number. [We] were not people anymore, we were numbers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rafiq asked Ebert questions about her family, admitted that he had not previously heard of the Auschwitz concentration camp, and was given a copy of her memoir, which he said he would read,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/jewishnews.timesofisrael.com\/spotlight\/sterling-hits-a-two-week-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Jewish News<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reported. After sharing her life story with Rafiq, Ebert told him, \u201cwhen somebody is different, it doesn\u2019t mean they are better or worse. We should be tolerant with each other.\u201d Rafiq replied that it is important for her to publicize her experiences \u201cto remember, in order that events are not repeated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ebert shared\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@lilyebert\/video\/7034616403143445765?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a clip<\/a>\u00a0of her talk with Rafiq on Tiktok and the video has already garnered over 10,000 likes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rafiq also\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JewishChron\/status\/1463880919002103808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">met<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday with Holocaust survivor and Kindertransport refugee Ruth Barnett. She\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JewishChron\/status\/1464258503904837633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a>\u00a0Rafiq, \u201cHumanity seems to need to have somebody to blame, somebody to hate, and the Jews have always been a very convenient scapegoat \u2026 because most people don\u2019t knowingly know a Jew \u2026 It\u2019s a very convenient way of getting rid of your own hateful, nasty feelings and thoughts that you don\u2019t want inside yourself. Just dump them all on the Jews.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWhen you start meeting a few Jews, that brings you up short,\u201d she added. \u201cYou have to start thinking, \u2018Is this person, who\u2019s just like, me a Jew? How do I square that difference?\u2019 That really gets people thinking.
