British-Jewish television presenter Rachel Riley won a libel lawsuit on Monday against a former staff member of the British Labour Party who accused her of allegedly calling ex-party leader Jeremy Corbyn a \u201cNazi.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Royal Courts of Justice in London\u00a0awarded<\/a>\u00a0Riley, who co-hosts the British game show \u201cCountdown,\u201d 10,000 euros (a little more than $11,000) in damages, and Justice Nicklin ruled that she is \u201centitled\u201d to \u201cvindication\u201d over a Twitter post by Laura Murray, 32.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Corbyn was egged during his visit to a mosque in March 2019, Riley, 35,\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0a screenshot of a tweet by\u00a0Guardian<\/em>\u00a0journalist Owen Jones that said, \u201cI think sound life advice is, if you don\u2019t want eggs thrown at you, don\u2019t be a Nazi.\u201d She added to the message, \u201cGood advice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Murray, who was the Labour party\u2019s head of complaints when it was led by Corbyn, replied to Riley\u2019s tweet saying, \u201cYou are publicly encouraging violent attacks against a man who is already a target for death threats. Please think for a second about what a dangerous and unhealthy role you are now choosing to play in public life.\u201d Riley did not respond to the message.<\/span><\/p>\n

Murray later tweeted: \u201cToday Jeremy Corbyn went to his local mosque for Visit My Mosque Day, and was attacked by a Brexiteer. Rachel Riley tweets that Corbyn deserves to be violently attacked because he is a Nazi. This woman is as dangerous as she is stupid. Nobody should engage with her. Ever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Riley, who has been outspoken about antisemitism in the Labour party, told the court she received abusive messages on Twitter as a result of Murray\u2019s tweet. In her witness statement for the trial, Riley said she was called a \u201cstupid little girl,\u201d \u201cracist fat filth,\u201d \u201cvile,\u201d \u201clying idiot\u201d and \u201clying b\u2014h\u201d by hateful Twitter users. She added that she was being sarcastic in her tweet and did not call Corbyn a Nazi. She also told the judge that Murray\u2019s tweet was harmful to her reputation, and Nicklin ruled in agreement with Riley.<\/span><\/p>\n

Riley claimed Murray was \u201cdog whistling\u201d her Twitter followers to \u201cpile on\u201d hateful messages targeting the \u201cCountdown\u201d host.<\/span><\/p>\n

She previously told the High Court, \u201cThe allegations in the tweet have made me feel vulnerable to physical attack, which is naturally very worrying. The volume of abusive and threatening messages was all-consuming. I found it hard to focus on my work and suffered sleepless nights. Even now, the abuse has gone unchecked and my reputation is not vindicated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Murray told the court she believes Riley was being \u201cdeliberately provocative\u201d with her tweet on the day that Corbyn got egged.<\/span><\/p>\n

She denied defaming Riley and argued that her Twitter post reflected the truth and her honest opinion. She said, \u201cThe purpose of my tweet was to advise people, as many as would listen, \u2018don\u2019t engage with this,\u2019 \u2018it\u2019s a waste of time,\u2019 \u2018no one gets anything from it,\u2019 \u2018it\u2019s a huge waste of emotional resources.\u2019 I could see this was really counter-productive. It\u2019s just totally useless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Riley said in a Twitter\u00a0post<\/a>\u00a0on Monday that she is \u201cextremely pleased\u201d with the outcome of the case.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been a very draining process and I\u2019m relieved to finally have vindication,\u201d she wrote. \u201cIt never needed to come to this, but I\u2019m grateful to have had an outlet to set the record straight. This is the culmination of several tough years for many Jewish people and allies. I hope this serves as a reminder you can\u2019t defame people without consequence, even on Twitter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
