Roughly 100 people gathered in New York City on Sunday to protest against antisemitism after two Jewish men were attacked last week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ilan Kaganovich and Blake Zavadsky, who was wearing an Israel Defense Forces sweatshirt, were assaulted in Brooklyn on December 26.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zavadsky was punched and had coffee thrown on him, while the two 21-year-olds were asked why they were in the neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the attackers \u201cdidn\u2019t like it, told me I had five seconds to take [the sweater] off and then he called us dirty Jews and punched me in the face twice,\u201d Zavadsky said, the\u00a0Times of Israel<\/em>\u00a0(ToI<\/em>) reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following the incident, the two Jewish men reached out to New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, who organized Sunday\u2019s protest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what we ran from, this is why our families brought us to America, and this is exactly what we\u2019re seeing happening in this country again,\u201d said Vernikov.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NYPD deemed the incident a hate crime and are working to identify the perpetrators.<\/span><\/p>\n

New York Governor Kathy Hochul<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0took to Twitter to condemn the attack, calling it \u201cabhorrent and unacceptable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHatred should not be anywhere,\u201d Zavadsky said,\u00a0ToI<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere should be\u00a0no type of hatred<\/a>\u00a0in any type of religion, any culture, and we\u2019re not going to stop fighting until this is all over.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Protestors carried signs that read\u00a0\u201cEnd Jew Hatred\u201d<\/a>\u00a0across the street from pro-Palestinian activists who held a counterprotest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The NYPD recorded 144 confirmed attacks against Jews between January and October 2021, out of 416 total hate crimes in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n
