American political commentator and former \u201cDaily Show\u201d host Jon Stewart released a new video on Wednesday clarifying comments he made last month about the portrayal of goblins in J.K. Rowling\u2019s \u201cHarry Potter\u201d series.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart\u00a0compared the depiction of goblins<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0who run the bank in the popular fantasy series to the offensive caricatures of Jews in the infamous antisemitic text \u201cThe Protocols of the Elders of Zion\u201d during an episode in December of his podcast \u201cThe Problem with Jon Stewart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Jewish groups came to Rowling\u2019s defense, insisting that the British author had not employed antisemitic caricatures. Stewart, however, said this week he had not accused Rowling of antisemitism and that his comments about the goblins were taken \u201cridiculously out of context.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI do not think J.K. Rowling is antisemitic. I did not accuse her of being antisemitic,\u201d Stewart, who is Jewish, said. \u201cI do not think that the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies are antisemitic. I really love the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies, probably too much for a gentleman of my considerable age.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Stewart described his discussion about the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d goblins last month as \u201ca lighthearted conversation amongst colleagues and chums having a laugh and enjoying ourselves\u201d while Stewart talked about his experience as a Jewish person watching the \u201cHarry Potter\u201d movies for the first time. The podcast host said he mentioned the appearance of the goblins to show \u201chow some tropes are so embedded in society that they\u2019re basically invisible, even in a considered process like movie-making.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI cannot stress this enough. I am not accusing J.K. Rowling of being antisemitic. She need not answer to any of it. I don\u2019t want the \u2018Harry Potter\u2019 movies censored in any way. It was a lighthearted conversation. Get a f**king grip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNobody\u2019s saying anything out of anger or accusation,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cI thought it was f**king hilarious. And it just arose out of nowhere. It makes you not want to say anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
