Photo: Reuters \/ Carlo Allegri \/ File.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0has published a\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/09\/pageoneplus\/corrections-jan-9-2022.html\">correction<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0acknowledging that \u201cIsrael\u2019s government is in Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On October 26, 2021, the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0published online a review by historian Jeremi Suri of Martin Indyk\u2019s book\u00a0<em>Master of the Game: Henry Kissinger and the Art of Middle East Diplomacy<\/em>. The article appeared in print in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0on December 19, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On December 21, 2021,\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0published my column about the review,\u00a0headlined \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2021\/12\/21\/new-york-times-writer-texas-professor-stands-by-description-of-government-in-tel-aviv-israel-as-burdensome-dependent\/\">New York Times Writer, Texas Professor, Stands by Description of \u2018Government in Tel Aviv,\u2019 Israel as \u2018Burdensome Dependent<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I reported then: \u201cSuri said that Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem, had been recognized by the US as the Israeli capital during the period covered by the book under review, Martin Indyk\u2019s\u00a0<em>Master of the Game: Henry Kissinger and the Art of Middle East Diplomacy<\/em>. \u2018That\u2019s just the diplomatic reality of that time,\u2019 he said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0correction was published online December 22, 2021, the day after the\u00a0<em>Algemeiner<\/em>\u00a0column appeared. It appeared in print on January 9, 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It reads: \u201cA\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/26\/books\/review\/master-of-the-game-martin-indyk.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>review<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0on Dec. 19 about \u201cMaster of the Game: Henry Kissinger and the Art of Middle East Diplomacy,\u201d by Martin Indyk, referred imprecisely to Tel Aviv, implying that it was the seat of Israel\u2019s government. Israel\u2019s government is in Jerusalem, not Tel Aviv.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0has yet to correct the description of Israel as a \u201cburdensome dependent,\u201d but I\u2019ll chalk this one up as a win nonetheless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The media watchdog group the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis said it had repeatedly asked the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0for a correction on the point. The first time, after the initial online publication, as<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/ny-times-corrects-jerusalem-not-tel-aviv-is-israels-capital\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Camera tells it<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, \u201cNot only did\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0at that point fail to set the record straight about such a basic fact as Israel\u2019s capital after editors were alerted to the problem, but incredibly, the paper\u00a0<em>republished<\/em>\u00a0the review, including the falsehood, again on Dec. 21.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Camera reports, \u201cWith the review\u2019s republication last month, CAMERA again reached out to the Paper of Record, reiterating that Israel\u2019s government sits in Jerusalem, and not Tel Aviv, as reported. This time, the message got through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of\u00a0The Forward\u00a0and North American editor of\u00a0The Jerusalem Post.
