Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;on January 10 published a piece by<em>&nbsp;Bloomberg<\/em>&nbsp;columnist Max Hastings titled \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/israels-filmmakers-take-aim-at-the-nations-moral-ambiguities\/2022\/01\/09\/53d79320-712b-11ec-b1e2-0539da8f4451_story.html\">Israel\u2019s Filmmakers Take Aim at the Nation\u2019s Moral Ambiguities<\/a><\/strong><\/span>,\u201d which seeks to reconcile the paradox of depictions on film of Israeli power and heroism, with what he perceives to be contradictory realities on the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Specifically, Hastings notes that Israeli perseverance has of late been depicted in works such as \u201cThe Spy\u201d (2019, about an Israeli who for years infiltrated the highest ranks of the Syrian government), \u201cTehran\u201d (2020, about spy operations in Iran), \u201cValley of Tears\u201d (2020, about the 1973 Yom Kippur War), and the upcoming \u201cGolda\u201d (about Israel Prime Minister Golda Meir). Yet, the author argues, in the five decades since the Yom Kippur War, \u201cthe world has seen Israel exploit its military dominance to treat the Palestinian people with a harshness that cannot be justified merely by rehearsing the wickedness of terrorism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Under closer scrutiny, Hastings\u2019 assertions turn out to be rather specious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Referring to the words of a former Shin Bet (Israel\u2019s internal security service) chief from the film \u201cThe Gatekeepers,\u201d Hastings concludes that \u201csince the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, successive Israeli governments had made no serious political attempt to secure peace, relying instead on the army and intelligence services to hold down the occupied territories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet it was five years after Rabin\u2019s assassination that the Camp David Accords were convened. Mediated by US President Bill Clinton, the parameters of the proposed deal offered&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/in-depth-arafat-rejected-peace-in-2000\/\">sweeping concessions<\/a>&nbsp;to Palestinian demands: an independent state on nearly 100 percent of the West Bank and Gaza with a road connecting the two territories, eastern Jerusalem as their capital with control over the Temple Mount, and a formula for the \u201cRight of Return,\u201d the claim by Palestinians that&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/ap-conflates-palestinian-refugee-myth-with-millions-displaced-during-pandemic\/\">refugees and their descendants<\/a>&nbsp;should be allowed to resettle in Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet while Jerusalem accepted these terms, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat rejected the peace offer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In 2002 and 2003, a \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/under-the-radar-the-history-of-israeli-palestinian-security-cooperation\/\">Roadmap for Peace<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u201d was proposed by US President George W. Bush. Israel threw its support behind the initiative, as it allowed for unprecedented security cooperation between Ramallah and Jerusalem. However, the roadmap was ultimately&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/middle-east-road-map-peace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">abandoned<\/a>&nbsp;as Jerusalem claimed that Palestinian authorities were failing to prevent terrorist activity against Israelis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Talks ramped up again from 2006 to 2008, during which Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/13\/magazine\/13Israel-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">met 36 times<\/a>. Although the two leaders were, according to Olmert, closer \u201cthan ever in the past to complet[ing] an agreement on principles that would have led to the end of the conflict between us and the Palestinian,\u201d the talks faltered when Hamas rockets prompted the outbreak of the 2008 Gaza War.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Direct negotiations were again resuscitated in 2010 and 2013. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reportedly had to overcome the \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/05\/world\/middleeast\/05clinton.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reluctance<\/a>&nbsp;of the Palestinians to come to the table,\u201d even after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had offered&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/15\/world\/middleeast\/15mideast.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">conditional support<\/a>&nbsp;for a Palestinian state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another significant blow to the peace process came in 2017, when Abbas&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-42250340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cut diplomatic ties<\/a>&nbsp;with Washington after the Trump administration moved the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Between the intermittent negotiations, Palestinians have continually rejected peace gestures from Israel. In 2019, for example, the PA&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/22\/us\/politics\/trump-middle-east-plan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boycotted<\/a>&nbsp;the \u201cPeace to Prosperity\u201d economic workshop in Bahrain that was attended by Israel and Arab states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As a contrast to the heroism and morality shown in Israeli films, Hastings writes that he \u201crecoil[s] from the systemic ruthlessness epitomized by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and reflected in the relentless expansion of Jewish settlements across the West Bank.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But while media outlets have repeatedly lambasted Jewish communities in the West Bank for allegedly continuing this \u201crelentless\u201d expansion (see&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-middle-east-jerusalem-israel-united-states-a6d7faba3f0fb6d40695729ec398dc21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/israel-moves-forward-with-plans-some-3000-settler-homes-monitoring-group-says-2021-10-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-settlements-west-bank.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>), it is crucial to note that before 2017, Israel&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/missing-the-peace-train-medias-obsessive-focus-on-israeli-settlements\/\">had not approved<\/a>&nbsp;new settlements for more than 20 years. After 2017, no settlements were constructed, but some long-established communities in the West Bank were&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/facts-about-jewish-settlements-in-the-west-bank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">retroactively legalized<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Indeed, population growth in 2017 remained&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/settler-growth-rate-stagnant-for-third-year-in-a-row-603641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stagnant<\/a>&nbsp;for the third year in a row at 3.5 percent. Still, the demand for new homes caused by natural population growth continued to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/aijac.org.au\/update\/exclusive-settlement-expansion-fails-to-even-mat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outpace<\/a>&nbsp;the supply of living space. In the eyes of the Israeli government, this&nbsp;necessitated&nbsp;the construction of additional homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Furthermore, this building has taken place within communities of considerable size that are widely expected by key international players&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;Palestinian leaders&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/opinion\/the-illusion-of-settlements-as-a-barrier-to-peace-608648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remain part<\/a>&nbsp;of the Jewish state following the conclusion of final status peace talks between Jerusalem and Ramallah. As such, any development within these Jewish communities does not change the conditions necessary for an eventual resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In contrast, the Palestinian Authority has adopted policies that reduce the chances for peaceful coexistence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Palestinian officials continue to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KhaledAbuToameh\/status\/1369388769519013889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reject<\/a>&nbsp;the legitimacy of the state of Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Moreover, the PA has&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2018\/03\/14\/does-the-palestinian-authority-pay-350-million-a-year-to-terrorists-and-their-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paid hundreds of millions of dollars<\/a><\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;to convicted terrorists and their families. The&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.memri.org\/reports\/2017-palestinian-authority-budget-shows-salaries-benefits-prisoners-released-prisoners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Palestinian Budget Book<\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;<\/a>states that payments must be made to killed or imprisoned Palestinian terrorists and their families from a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/wapo-ap-reuters-omit-critical-context-about-pas-pay-for-slay-turn-facts-about-policy-into-israeli-claims\/\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Martyrs Fund\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;because the recipients constitute a \u201cfighting sector.\u201d Notably, the amount paid out increases in proportion to the severity of the crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/israels-filmmakers-take-aim-at-the-nations-moral-ambiguities\/2022\/01\/09\/53d79320-712b-11ec-b1e2-0539da8f4451_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Israel\u2019s Filmmakers Take Aim at the Nation\u2019s Moral Ambiguities\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a>&nbsp;is a well-researched, well-presented piece that provides an interesting account of how Israelis have come to represent the history of their country which, at multiple points, came very close to annihilation. And cinema is a powerful educational tool. Indeed, the media have long and uncritically regarded Palestinian cinema as a legitimate way to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/how-media-reviews-enable-cinema-used-vehicle-palestinian-propaganda\/\">teach<\/a>&nbsp;the public about the lives of Palestinians living in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. As such, it makes sense to view Israeli cinema as a window into the aspirations and anxieties of Israelis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But Hastings\u2019 media critique veers into political grandstanding in certain spots.
