\"\"<\/a>Worse Than Wrong: The Danger of Misleading Headlines About Terror Wave in Israel<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n

Battling media bias begins at the top: the headline.<\/span><\/p>\n

A shooting on Dizengoff Street in central Tel Aviv on April 7 by a Palestinian assailant that left three people dead and 15 wounded, was the latest attack to roil Israel as part of a terror wave. Thursday night\u2019s was the fourth deadly occurrence in less than three weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Together,\u00a014 people<\/a>\u00a0have been killed.<\/span><\/p>\n

But while Israel tries to defend itself from an onslaught \u2014 which is a direct result of incitement by\u00a0radical Islamist<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0terrorist elements<\/a>\u00a0urging Palestinian youths to\u00a0murder Jews<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 news headlines around the world are misleading readers about what\u2019s really going on.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem with \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200bthese headlines is that they do not convey the true picture, even if they aren\u2019t outright false.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a result, readers are left unable to fully conceptualize actual events, and may instead be left with inaccurate \u201cimpressions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Enter our organization, which tackles such \u201cstealth\u201d bias on a daily basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, an otherwise well-researched and well-written April 6 article published by\u00a0The Daily Express,<\/em>\u00a0originally had this misleading title: \u201cIsrael\u2019s Naftali Bennet seeks control of social media to prevent \u2018new wave of terrorism.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

While the piece notes that social media platforms are being used to incite violence against Israelis, the assertion that Jerusalem is seeking to clamp down on all social media use is incorrect.<\/span><\/p>\n

One can make the case that the headline implied that Israel is sliding towards authoritarianism.<\/span><\/p>\n

This implication, however, is belied by data.<\/span><\/p>\n

Israel was recently ranked above Italy, Spain, and the United States in a\u00a0respected global index of democratic values<\/a><\/strong><\/span>. The latest edition of the annual Democracy Index from the prestigious Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) gave Israel 7.97 points out of a maximum of ten, just behind France (7.99 points) and Britain (8.1 points).<\/span><\/p>\n

Even while Israel is being forced to contend with a wave of terrorism, the country remains a modern, Western-orientated, liberal democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

After we contacted editors at\u00a0The Daily Express<\/em>\u00a0to clarify this point, the original headline was amended to:<\/span><\/p>\n

Relatedly, the UK Board of Deputies announced that it was\u00a0filing a formal complaint<\/a>\u00a0against\u00a0The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0over its headline about the Tel Aviv terror attack. Additionally, the\u00a0Israeli Foreign Ministry<\/a>\u00a0and others on\u00a0social media<\/a>\u00a0came together to shine a spotlight on the breach on Thursday night of journalistic ethics by many news organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

By publishing ambiguous headlines \u2014 that is, failing to make clear that Thursday\u2019s incident in Tel Aviv was an act of terror \u2014 media outlets are effectively framing developments in accordance with certain narratives, not actual events.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, it is the role of the media to report just the facts, wherever they may lead. Otherwise, news organizations risk influencing or even fully shaping a reader\u2019s views about a certain topic or issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not news. It is editorializing, and there is a time and place for that.<\/span><\/p>\n

At a time when roughly 8 in 10 Americans get their news\u00a0from digital devices<\/a>, headlines are often the first and last thing people read regardless of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0study<\/a>\u00a0focusing on mobile phone app updates, or \u201cpushes\u201d as they are often called in the industry, found that \u201cpeople click on the alert about half the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Given the way in which news is consumed, some 8 out of 10 people\u00a0read an article\u2019s headline<\/a>\u00a0and get no further.<\/span><\/p>\n

Headlines are also the part of a news item that tends to be\u00a0shared most on social media<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Accordingly, by failing to adequately convey the facts about Israel\u2019s latest battle against terror \u2014 especially in headlines \u2014\u00a0 news organizations are warping the real situation and, as a corollary, diminishing the threat and consequences of terrorism not only to the Jewish state, but to every nation across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n
