Jewish American comedian and actor Gilbert Gottfried has died after battling a \u201clong illness,\u201d his family announced Tuesday on his official Twitter page. He was 67.<\/span><\/p>\n

His publicist said<\/a> he died of recurrent ventricular tachycardia caused by myotonic dystrophy type 2, a form of muscular dystrophy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children,\u201d Gottfried\u2019s family said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cAlthough today is a sad day for us all, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert\u2019s honor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gottfried gave life to a number of memorable characters, including the parrot Iago in the \u201cAladdin\u201d franchise and the Aflac duck in the commercials for the insurance company. His other voice roles included Kraang Subprime in \u201cTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,\u201d the robotic bird Digit in PBS Kids<\/em>\u2019 \u201cCyberchase,\u201d Mr. Mxyzptlk in \u201cSuperman: The Animated Series,\u201d Dr. Bender and his son Wendell in \u201cThe Fairly OddParents,\u201d as well as characters in \u201cSpongeBob Squarepants,\u201d \u201cThe Ren & Stimpy Show,\u201d \u201cDuckman,\u201d and \u201cDisney\u2019s House of Mouse,\u201d among many others.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tributes to Gottfried from Hollywood actors and comedians began pouring in on Twitter after his death was announced, with Dane Cook writing, \u201cGilbert Gottfried was never not funny. He was a lovely guy, always friendly and made many people happy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mel Brooks said, \u201cSo sorry to hear about <\/span>Gilbert Gottfried<\/span>\u2019s passing. Truly a funny, funny guy. So unique. He will be sorely missed.\u201d Jon Stewart noted that Gottfried had the ability to \u201cleave you gasping for breath\u201d and called him \u201cjust indescribably unusually hilarious.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jason Alexander said Gottfried \u201cmade me laugh at times when laughter did not come easily.\u201d He added, \u201cWhat a gift. I did not know him well but I loved what he shared with me. My best wishes and sympathy to his family.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGilbert Gottfried<\/span> made me laugh so hard that day on set, I could barely do my job,\u201d said Seth MacFarlane. \u201cA wholly original comic, and an equally kind and humble guy behind the scenes. He will be missed.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gottfried was born on Feb. 28, 1955, to a Jewish family in Brooklyn, NY. He started performing stand-up comedy at age 15 and had a 12-episode appearance on \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d in season 6.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1980, he and his \u201cSNL\u201d co-star Eddie Murphy starred together in \u201cBeverly Hills Cop II.\u201d Gottfried later starred in the \u201cProblem Child\u201d movies, \u201cHighway to Hell\u201d and \u201cLook Who\u2019s Talking Too.\u201d A documentary titled \u201cGilbert,\u201d about his career and personal life, was released in 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n
