Jewish American philosopher and linguist Noam Chomsky said that <\/strong><\/span>Ukrain<\/strong><\/span>e<\/a> must make concessions to Russian demands, saying that the public must \u201cpay attention to the reality of the world,\u201d in an interview with Current Affairs<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne option is to pursue the policy we are now following\u2026 to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. And yes, we can pursue that policy with the possibility of nuclear war. Or we can face the reality that the only alternative is a diplomatic settlement, which will be ugly \u2013 it will give Putin and his narrow circle an escape hatch,\u201d Chomsky said.<\/span><\/div>\n

\u201cWe know the basic framework is neutralization of Ukraine, some kind of accommodation for the Donbas region, with a high level of autonomy, maybe within some federal structure in Ukraine, and recognizing that, like it or not, Crimea is not on the table,\u201d continued Chomsky. \u201cYou may not like it, you may not like the fact that there\u2019s a hurricane coming tomorrow, but you can\u2019t stop it by saying, \u2018I don\u2019t like hurricanes\u2019 or \u2018I don\u2019t recognize hurricanes.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Chomsky, who originally made his name in the field of linguistics, has been known for his anti-war, anti-capitalist, and \u2013 perhaps most prominently \u2013 anti-Zionist stances<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. He has called Israel\u2019s military defense akin to \u201cmurder,\u201d has said that Palestine deserves justice from US and Israeli \u201cwar crimes,\u201d and called the adoption of the 1947 United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine “a very bad decision.” He most recently signed an open letter<\/a><\/strong><\/span> denouncing what the letter called an Israeli plot to silence a pro-Palestinian musician.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chomsky\u2019s rise to political prominence began with his 1967 anti-Vietnam War essay \u201cThe Responsibility of Intellectuals,\u201d which helped lead to his placement on President Richard Nixon’s Enemies List in 1971. He has also spoken at length about American military interventionism, capitalism, and neoliberalism.<\/span><\/p>\n
