Ron DeSantis was invited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The op-ed was titled \u201cPersona Non Grata at a Holocaust Memorial\u201d and was authored by Elliot Abrams and Eric Cohen, the chairman and CEO of the Tikvah Fund, a think thank that is an engine of Jewish conservatism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Tikvah had hosted many events at the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-705901\">Holocaust memorial museum<\/a>, they wrote, but the leadership conference set for June 12 hit a wrinkle \u2014 one that Abrams and Cohen said pointed to growing intolerance of conservative ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOut of the blue, we were told by the museum staff that Mr. DeSantis didn\u2019t \u2018align with the museum\u2019s values and its message of inclusivity,\u2019\u201d the op-ed said. \u201cEither we disinvite the governor, they said, or our event was unwelcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">That account made sense to many of the people who read it. To many people on the left, it was obvious why New York\u2019s Holocaust museum wouldn\u2019t welcome DeSantis, who has close ties to former President Donald Trump and mocked but declined to condemn neo-Nazi protesters in his state. To people on the right, the purported incident fit neatly into a prevailing narrative about \u201ccancel culture,\u201d in which liberal elites seek to tamp down ideas they don\u2019t share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">However, according to the museum, there was no cancellation. In fact, as the museum said in a statement Friday, there was no event at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cNo one was banned or canceled,\u201d a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. \u201cThe fact is that no contract with the Tikvah Fund was ever signed for this rental event to be held at the Museum and no deposit was ever made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/f_auto,fl_lossy\/t_JD_ArticleMainImageFaceDetect\/478337\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Florida Governor Ron Desantis speaks during a campaign rally by then US president Donald Trump at Pensacola International Airport in Pensacola, Florida, US, October 23, 2020. (credit: TOM BRENNER\/REUTERS)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As a private institution, the Museum of Jewish Heritage has full discretion about who can rent its space. The New York Jewish Week obtained a copy of the contract between the museum and Tikvah, which Cohen said he had signed. That contract explains that museum facilities cannot be used for advancing a particular religious doctrine, political fundraising or activity that is advocating for a political candidate, group or ideology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">t was after Cohen signed the contract that the museum learned DeSantis was a scheduled speaker, Cohen said. Cohen said he had spoken by phone with the museum\u2019s CEO, Jack Kliger, who told him that the museum does not welcome political speakers of any ideology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cI explained to him that we have had many events there with prominent speakers from public life, and asked him to reconsider,\u201d Cohen said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Critics of the museum have noted that Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke at an arts event there in 2018, when she was a congressional candidate. The museum\u2019s leadership has changed since then, and the country has grown more politically polarized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The latest episode offers further evidence of that polarization \u2014 and that even Holocaust museums are not immune from America\u2019s mounting culture wars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the op-ed, Abrams \u2014 a former Trump administration official \u2014 and Cohen said the museum\u2019s decision reflected dangerous currents in contemporary society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe new thought police don\u2019t see themselves as acting solely or primarily out of fear. They believe they are defending the good: inclusion against hate, equality against discrimination, victimized minorities against white privilege,\u201d they wrote. \u201cYet the pseudo-gospel of inclusion breaks down quickly. In the name of inclusivity, a Jewish museum sent us a clear message: Some people are to be excluded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">They added, \u201cIn the name of fighting hate, the museum decided that the millions of Floridians who support Gov. DeSantis \u2014 including many Jews \u2014 are so hateful that they don\u2019t even merit a voice in the great American conversation. A museum of tolerance has become intolerant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The museum called the piece \u201cfactually inaccurate\u201d and said it had not been contacted for comment. The Wall Street Journal did not return a request for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The op-ed elicited a flurry of responses, including pride from DeSantis\u2019 critics and concern from conservatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe Museum has always taught \u2018Thou shalt not stand idly by.\u2019 They just met the challenge of that message and they did so admirably,\u201d wrote Danny Wool, a historian who worked as an educator at the museum in the past, on Facebook. \u201cI never felt prouder to say that I am an MJH alum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Coalition for Jewish Values, a group of right-wing rabbis that formed in the wake of Trump\u2019s election to advance conservative political ideas, issued a statement \u201ccastigating\u201d the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt is hard to see this decision as anything but politically motivated, and directly contrary to Jewish interests as well,\u201d Rabbi Moshe Parnes said in the statement. \u201cAs a Floridian and a rabbi, I can say that one would be hard-pressed to find an elected official more attentive to the Jewish community than Ron DeSantis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In New York City, Republican City Council members Inna Vernikov and Joe Borelli sent a letter to Kliger, the museum\u2019s CEO, expressing \u201cdisappointment\u201d about Abrams and Cohen\u2019s charge. They asked that the museum \u201cimmediately rescind\u201d the decision to prohibit DeSantis from speaking at Tikvah\u2019s conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The letter compared barring\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-695348\">DeSantis<\/a>\u00a0from the museum to Nazis censoring freedom of speech in the 1930s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIn modern day America, we have seen attempts to cancel political speech, in a way that is reminiscent of Nazi and Soviet Era censorship,\u201d the letter said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Museum of Jewish Heritage, an institution that pledges to promote tolerance and inclusion, excludes @GovRonDeSantis from attending an event on their premises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The episode comes as DeSantis makes news for his stances on abortion \u2014 Florida would ban abortion after 15 weeks if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, as it is expected to do shortly \u2014 and LGBTQ inclusion. He is a champion of Florida\u2019s new \u201cParental Rights Education\u201d legislation \u2013 dubbed by critics as the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill \u2013 prohibiting schools from discussing gender and sexuality with students in kindergarten through third grade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the museum, none of that was the reason for Tikvah\u2019s event not taking place there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis is not a free speech or censorship issue,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cThis was simply a contractual and logistical decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He added that the Tikvah Fund is \u201ctrying to create a fight where none exists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Michael Glickman, who ran the museum from 2016 to 2019 and now leads JMuse, an organization seeking to improve Jewish arts and cultural institutions, told the New York Jewish Week that he regretted that \u201cthe cancellation became the story\u201d given how much value the museum could add in the current climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThis museum has a depth of resources in their collections that could easily come to life and speak to situations like this,\u201d said Glickman, who added he did not have any information about the saga beyond what had been publicly reported. \u201cAt the same time, public history museums have the opportunity of calling on history to address contemporary moments (perhaps even shining a light on what happens when people in power actively work to restrict basic human rights and\/or stay silent in the face of Nazi protests).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He added, \u201cIt\u2019s just too bad that everyone got sidetracked and distracted by politics. I suppose that is just the environment we live in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For now, Tikvah is planning to stage its conference as planned on June 12 at Chelsea Piers\u2019 Pier Sixty, a private event space.
