Photo: Reuters<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli officials told American and international counterparts that there is a suspicion that Palestinian authorities are trying to destroy or damage evidence related to the death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, in order to make it impossible to determine who shot her,\u00a0<em>Yedioth Achronot<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ynet.co.il\/news\/article\/hkscza5i9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel is seeking a joint investigation with the Palestinian Authority into the death of the Palestinian-American journalist, who was killed while covering an Israeli counter-terrorism operation on Wednesday in the Palestinian city of Jenin, from which several Palestinian terrorist attacks have been launched in recent weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside id=\"subscribeArticlePage\" class=\"Yes alg_subscribe_cont subscribeArticlePageCls form_hidden subscribe_glb subscribe_test\" data-version=\"Article Page\" data-send-to-ga=\"1\" data-delay=\"0\">\n<section class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The PA has\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/05\/12\/israel-slams-palestinian-authority-for-rejecting-joint-probe-into-reporters-death-what-are-they-trying-to-hide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejected this request<\/a> and repeatedly blamed Israeli forces for Abu Akleh\u2019s death. Israeli officials have disputed this, saying the Palestinian-American journalist may have been hit by Palestinian gunfire, and that a forensic exam of the bullet recovered from her body is necessary to determine culpability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli officials have described the behavior of the Palestinian Authority as absurd,\u00a0<em>Yedioth Achronot<\/em>\u00a0reported. The assessment in Israel is that while there will not be an additional autopsy, the PA may ultimately agree to a joint probe amid US pressure, the outlet continued. While the PA cannot afford an overt display of cooperation with Israel, in light of Palestinian public opinion towards the PA, there is a chance it may ultimately relent in light of US President Joe Biden\u2019s upcoming visit to the region and their need for US funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While it remains unclear who shot Abu Akleh, the Israeli military is currently investigating the possibility that one of its bullets hit the journalist, Israel\u2019s Channel 12\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mako.co.il\/news-military\/2022_q2\/Article-22082d57459b081027.htm?sCh=31750a2610f26110&amp;pId=173113802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Thursday evening, citing military sources. The main incident under review is an exchange of fire that occurred between Israeli and Palestinian forces some 150 meters (500 feet) from where the journalist was shot. REUTERS\/Mohamad Torokman<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Thursday said the Palestinian Authority is \u201cpreventing any possibility of a joint investigation\u201d to determine whether Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Palestinian or Israeli gunfire, and withholding \u201caccess to the basic findings that would be necessary in order to reach the truth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Abu Akleh, 51, was fatally shot while covering an Israeli counter-terrorism operation on Wednesday in Jenin. Several deadly attacks against Israeli civilians originated from the Palestinian city during the recent terror wave, which has killed 19 people since March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The PA swiftly blamed Israeli forces for her death, calling it an \u201cassassination,\u201d though a Palestinian forensics expert\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/05\/11\/palestinian-forensic-expert-not-possible-to-determine-if-journalist-killed-by-idf-fire-as-probe-ongoing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0that it was not yet possible to assign culpability based on an initial autopsy. The emir of Qatar, which owns Al Jazeera, likewise accused Israel of killing the Palestinian-American journalist while speaking at a press conference in Iran on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli officials have, in turn, said dozens of Palestinian gunmen, including members of Islamic Jihad, opened \u201cindiscriminate\u201d fire at Israeli forces during the operation and may have killed Abu Akleh, though the evidence remains inconclusive without further investigation. Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/05\/11\/israel-asks-palestinian-authorities-to-hand-over-bullet-that-killed-al-jazeera-journalist-for-forensic-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said Wednesday night<\/a>\u00a0that the government is seeking to carry out a forensic exam of the bullet that was pulled from Abu Akleh\u2019s body to get definitive answers, and to share findings with both PA and American authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">PA President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday \u201cwe rejected\u201d Israel\u2019s request for a joint investigation, however, \u201cbecause they committed the crime and because we don\u2019t trust them. The PA \u201cwill go immediately to the International Criminal Court in order to track down the criminals,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Officials in the Biden administration were continuing to press Palestinian officials on the matter, Israel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Channel 11<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kan.org.il\/item\/?itemId=127064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Thursday, with Israeli officials telling American counterparts that without Palestinian cooperation and a review of the bullet, it would be near impossible to establish the truth of the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kerenhajioff\/status\/1524792003447463937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a>\u00a0released Thursday, Keren Hajioff, a spokeswoman for Bennett, reiterated that Abu Akleh\u2019s death was \u201ca tragedy,\u201d and took issue with the PA\u2019s refusal to share evidence. \u201cWhy are they rejecting a joint investigation?
